Finally got a .223 HB on order
« on: May 18, 2005, 07:37:27 AM »
I don't post to much because I don't have a Handi yet.  Alas, due to all the guys and the posts being made I did make the move and got one on order 5/9.  Hopefully it will be here soon, got a .223 HB (SB2-323) on order.  Did not want to get it at W-World but could not justify the extra $80 the locals wanted for it.

Now if anyone has a favorite reload using Hornady bullets or using Accurate 2520 powder, I would really appreciate the info.  I live a couple miles from the Hornady plant and can get a price break on bullets to reload when they reject a Lot.  Also got several pounds of Accurate 2520 really cheap and want to burn that up first.

Thanks for all the info. that you've all posted.  If anyone needs an unbiased opinion on scopes, let me know.  I've spent the last several months researching rifle scopes.  Wanted the best bang for the buck.

Thanks again,
Mark 8)

What is your opinion on the best bang for the buck riflescope for the .223 HB.  I have one and have a 3-9x40 on it and wanted to find something different for it.

My .223 gives the best results with the lighter bullets.  I pretty much always load Hornadys.

My best results are with the 40gr V-Max and H335 powder.

I also get good results with the 45gr Hornady Hornets with BLC-2.   (Make sure you get the .224 dia Hornet because they also make a 45 gr  .223 Hornet for the Hornet.  Confusing, isn't it?)
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

Igall,

I guess that would depend upon the ranges that you shoot at and price range you want to stay in.  The 3x9x40 is a very good all-round scope.  The best one that I have found for $200 and under would be the Burris FullField II.  Lifetime warranty and Ballistic Plex recticle and only one that will give you 95% light transmission.  I would not risk my dollars on a BSA, NCstar or any thing claiming to be from eastern europe.  There are two scopes for under $100 and those are the Simmons WTC and the new (Bushnell made) Tasco that I would even try.  Lots of good comments about Mueller, but I do not own one.  I have the Burris right now and also got a 4x12x40 Cabela's PineRidge that I will try on it.  If I would not have gotten a verrrry good price, I would not have got the PineRidge.  Weaver Grand Slam is also one of the best scopes out there and ranked right with the Zeiss Conquest for low light useability per Outdoor life's comparision panel couple years ago.  Bushnell's Legend is also a good scope with about 91% light transmission.  Banner's have also been talked about on the boards as being a good low price scope.  Stay with a 40 mm scope because the 50 does not increase usable brightness.  Pay for a fully-multi-coated scope and high light transmission.
Leopould's are very popular and always talked highly of.  But fall short on light transmission:  Rifleman approx 86%, VX I 88% and VX II about 92%.  I love their warranty, but not the price I have to pay to get it.  I would buy a Burris first or a Weaver.  You can get a Zeiss Conquest for the same price as a VX III.  Check out Opticstalk.com.

A new Simmons Aetec fits your bill, coming in under $200.  They're great scopes, and the new ones have even more features than the previous models.  I'd buy another in a heart beat before I spent hundreds on those other scopes.
