well, i went out to the range again, this time in driving rain, with a new box of .30-40 ammo. and it did the same thing it did before. with the sights set 100 yards, and aiming for the gong at 200 yards, it would splash down about 150 yards. i took a wild guess at adjusting the sights to 500 yards, and by sheer luck it hit dead on, with a very satisfying "thunk". i thought it was an ammo issue, but know i'm wondering if perhaps it's the sights.got a set of dies today too, so i'll have to try handloads as well

? First thing I would do is check the crown to see if it maybe throwing the shots off. Have you shot at paper to see if the bullets are tipping? Some thing is definately out of wack. Jim

that might be it. i've shot it on paper, hit a foot low at 50 yards, but no keyholeing and it grouped pretty good.

if i can't get it to shoot good, then i have a project idea. i don't want to get rid of it 'cuase i've wanted a Krag for a long time, and accuracy aside, this ones in great shape. my gunsmith built himself a custom Krag, starting with a Norwegian 6.5 model. he modifed a Boyds stock to fit, rebarreled it with a M96 barrel with the iron sights removed, and found a low mount scope mount. it wasn't cheap, but it looks very nice and shoots like a dream. maybe i'll do the same in .30-40, but i would like to keep it as is for now, its quite a handy little carbine. in fact i've heard of people rebarreling Krags with a 1903 barrel. is this possible?

A couple generations ago, when surplus Krag rifles were plentiful and the supply of Krag barrels had dried up, it was common to rebarrel using a Springfield 1903 barrel. Then shank would have to be cut off, threaded, and rechambered for .30-40, of course.

It's one of the few surplus barrels available that has enough "meat" on the shank to fit the Krag.

Kevin.303; What kind of ammo are you using? If your ammo is fresh then i would try recrowning it first. You can find replacement 30/40 barrels at numrich gun parts that fit 1896/1898/1901/1902 Krags PN# 726440 and costs $185.35 if your interested in keeping it a 30/40? The barrel is 22" long also. Sorry not recrowning it may need to be counterbored!!!!! An inch can make a big difference. It just maybe that simple too.

talking with my friend the gunsmith on another forum, the general agreement is it's the crown. and after looking at it i'm pretty sure thats the problem. this was an original rifle barrel cut back, and there's not much of a crown at all. the ammo i had this time was fresh, bought it an hour before. i will keep it .30/40, but in the future i might get another one and rebuild it to 7x57, just for kicks.

You might also, check out the Krag Collectors Site and see that your rifle has the correct sights for the ammo your using? Unless my memory is gone they regulated the sights for the ammo of choice, at the time. Don't know if you've checked but, could be a bedding problem also.

talked with my smith a few days ago, said the front sight post is way to big, had to cut it sown then cut a new dovetail, and install a new bead. didn't like the sound of it, but he's a relly talented gunsmith and knows what he's doing, so i'll trust him.
