Today, I was out and tooling around gun shops, and I went to a place that sells alot of mil. rifles. I ended up pick up an unissued yugo SKS. I payed about $200.00 for it out the door. Yes, I know that is a little to much to pay, but this is one of the cleanest ones I have seen in these parts in about a year. Also, it came with two 30 round mags., ammo pouch, cleaning kit, sling and a dummy nade. So, I think I did pretty good. It is one of the best shooting SKS I have shot in a long while too.

I had one some years back, but, I really did not like it. It was showing its age and the bll was junk. I could not get that thing to hit at 50 yards, so I traded it pretty fast. This one is great, but, I think it needs a friend.  :grin:  One might follow me home soon.

Also can any one tell me about ammo. What is a good hunting round. I might try it on deer, and it will come with me on yote hunts. I know of wolf ammo, is there any thing better? Cant beat that 7.62x39 ammo price though.

Congrats on your purchase.  For varmit hunting there is the 122gr hollow point ammo and I just purchased some of the Wolf 7.62x39 154gr softpoint ammo from www.midwayusa.com to try for hunting just incase I want to use my sks.  In the beginning Wolf ammo was very dirty but they have sure cleaned up their act and there making good quality clean stuff now. When i say dirty the barrels were dirty with residue.  Just make sure you clean your barrel good on your yugo sks its not like the other sks's its not chromelined but its no biggie just clean it good after each outing and you'll be ok.                                                         BigBill

That is one thing I do with all my toys. Half the time I do not have the money to buy them twice and try to keep them as long as I can.

The same guy that I bought this one from had a few more. They were a Chiness parratrooper, it was $200.00, and he had a russin, it was $225.00. Are thoughs running low also? Should I look into getting them. Both rifles looked untouched, they were is the same shap as my yugo. What do you think?

unissued Yugos go for $300-$350 Cdn, so $200 is a real good deal, especially with 2 30 round mags( we're limited to 5 rounders :(  ) is it a M-59 or a M-59/66AB1 ?

Since he mentioned gernade so i think its a 59/66.  The chinese and russian sks's are a good buy right now too.  The chinese and russian sks are long gone from the wholesalers and most dealers what your seeing right now are the ones traded in that were most likely closet queens.  Back then some of these guys shot their buddies sks and went out and bought one and maybe just shot it once and it sat in the closet for all these years.  Most of the ones i have seen aren't even really cleaned of all the cosmoline too.  So with any used sks we must clean it as if it was a new one.  Is the russian a refurb or not?  If its painted black and has a black bolt its a refurb if its silver bolt its an orginal russian sks. The refurbs NIB here are selling for $250 if you can find one.  The shorter barreled chinese paratrooper is worth a lot more than $200 too.  I have seen them hitting $275 to $325.  Just checkout the prices on auction arms, gun broker or gunsamerica too.  If you see these sks's cheap and you want them grab them now!!!!!                             BigBill

A buddy of mine just paid 2 bills for one also.  There is a recent flood of these and they have really nice wood, but no finish on the wood.  They have been bouncing around the internet for 150 bucks retail.....so if these guys are getting dealer prices and selling them for 200..they are making a killing.  I don't like the grenade attachment....but the flip-up rear sight that is for the grenade laucher is nice.  It is real easy to see for weak eyes.  Dave's came with a recoil pad too.  I thought that was a little odd...kinda like putting a recoil pad on a 22rf.

I think $200 for an unissued yugo 59/66 is a good price since the "like new" ones are $159,  the excellent ones are $139 and the shooter grade are $99.95 now at AIM.  I didn't see any unissued ones at AIM so i'm sure how much they go for now since this maybe the last shippment of them.  I'm not sure what the first ones with the log books are worth either.  They just had a jump in yugo prices.                               BigBill

i tried a friends Chinese SKS, it was a real military one from the '60s, felt pretty good. the ones that we can get for $159 from norinco are made for the civillian market and are absolute garbage, so if/when i buy a SKS it'll be 55/66 or a genuine russkie. lots of fun, but busy saving for a '92 SRC in .44-40, so maybe next year. i've seen guys adapt those grenade launchers into high powered potatoe guns, not too sure if thats legal.

Yes, the Yugo I pick up is a 59/66. It also is a yellowish, I do not think it is stained. I have seen brown 59/66 also but there seems to be more yellowish ones.

You know, I was looking for that on mine. The rear and frunt flip up night sights are not there. The one I had a few years ago had them. But, this one dont. It also dont look like there was ever a spot for them, I know what they look like mounted, and I can not tell if there was ever a place to mount them. Does that mean any thing? Any info on the sights?

O, I almost forgot. The nade luncher has holes drilled all the way around it, kinda like a break or something. Was that done by the Yugos or someone else? My old one did not have holes drilled in it.

The  holes around the launcher are on the early model guns.. I have the same on a low serial number gun.. Later production guns did not have the holes..

I don't know what was wrong with the chinese sks's you have up there but towards the last of the import of the chinese sks's here to the US their quality was equal or even surpassed the russians.  The chinese were turning out some awesome sks's.  The romanians and Albanian sks's aren't bad either. No matter which one you get if its a good one it will be for ever they never go bad or break they just take a beating  and keep on ticking. My orginal chinese has never failed me yet.  And i would take it into battle anyday over an M16.  The chinese sks and AK47 proven weapons in Vietnam.                          BigBill

i think the chinese ones you have are ones made to milspec, where as the brand new ones being imported are made from the beginning for civillian sales, and are no where near as tough.you'd have to come up and try one to see what i mean. and i think that a bad lot got through recently because even a lot of the new ones are of decent quality.

The best round I have found for hunting is
made by Sellier & Bellot. The wolf stuff does
not seem to expand as well. Something
strange I have just thought about, I have never
had a pass through shot with a 7.62x39
on a Whitetail that I remember?
The bullet has always been in the ribcage
or just under the hide on the opposite siide.
Strange how things pop into your head like that.

Been few years back . 6 or 7 years ago .My son shot a deer with a wolf 122gr HP. It broke up some . The winchester soft points seem to work better. No matter now you chop or dice it. Its a auto loading 30-30. We all know they can kill deer. The thing that makes a good killer is a good bullet
