CC-

Many thanks for the heads up.  I'm getting one of those .44 moulds.  It looks like the cut off for ordering is actually in one week, so I'll mail mine tomorrow.

Glad I could help. I ordered one of the new 500 gr 45-70 molds. I already have the 400 gr version and the .45PRS so this will pretty much take care of all my needs. I was hoping to get a 38 Snakebite, but it wasn't in the cards...at least as far as my wallet is concerned!

The price is better than special ordering on my own, but it was still a sobering figure.  If it saves a few headaches on down the line, it's worth the price.

Besides, you always have the next order to look forward to, and you can get snakebit then. :)  Does he put the orders together about once a year or so?  That's what it looked like to me.  Darn nice of him to take the trouble, and nice of you to let us know.

"sobering" is a mild word my friend! But have you ever looked at the cost of a custom mold from the other major suppliers out there!?!?!  After looking at that I realized that I wuz gittin' a bargain!!!!!

Fortunately I have access to a Snakebite mold, one of my pards, who is also my Gunsmith, has one that can be had if I cozen him up with right kind of likker!  And I don't use many .38s anyway. A couple of clubs that I shoot with have a "Saddle Tramp" catagory that only requires a lever gun and one revolver. When I shoot in that catagory I use my .38 Open Top and my .357 Rossi. It's a fun change of pace and when I have to head to work directly after a match it's nice not have so many irons to clean up. 8)

A word of caution: Follow the instructions to the letter when using that new mold! And don't try to become a "Casting speed demon". The temptation is to make a billion of them as fast as you can go...which seems like it should be easy with a 6 holer! But you can over heat that thing purdy fast and you will start getting semi melted slugs hitting yer cloth pad right qwick!

Hope you enjoy yer new mold and the slugs as much as I have mine! :-D

Oh, I've looked at the cost of other custom moulds.  Then I just kept looking for something else. :)   Thanks for the warning about overheating that 6-holer.  I've only used two cavity iron moulds before, so aluminum will be a new experience.  Going slow shouldn't be a problem, that's about my only speed these days.

That "Saddle Tramp" should become a sanctioned shooting category.  It would sure give new shooters a good way to ease into the sport without breaking the bank, or begging for borrowed guns.  Do you do reloads on the clock, or just shoot a smaller number of targets?  I think I've heard that same class called "Working Cowboy," too.  It would be a little more real, and a little less Hollywood inspired.  It would also give folks a chance to shoot nicer guns, since you could afford better quality if the quantity wasn't so dang high.

Yup! You have! The NCOWS group uses it as "Working Cowboy"!. My local SASS club calls it 'Saddle Tramp' jist ta be different. 8)

As to the reload thing, that's flexable. It can be done with reloads on the clock, or with a smaller number of rounds fired overall. The catagory is scored only against itself so it makes no difference, as long as all participants in the catagory shoot the same number of rounds.  At larger matches we have at times agreed to jist shoot fewer rounds so as to speed things up. And at other times, when there were a smaller number of participants, we all agreed on reloading so we shot jist as many pistol/rifle rounds as the other catagories! :-D
