Which Chokes for Trap, Skeet and Five Stand?
« on: May 04, 2005, 05:46:16 PM »
I'll be shooting in a friendly competition next week.  Which chokes should I use in my o/u 20 guage?  I only have the standard 3 that came with it.

For Skeet?

For Trap?

For 5 Stand?

Thanks,

Smoky

Assuming you're not going to buy new chokes:

Skeet = Improved Cylinder
Trap = Full
5 Stand = Depends on the course, probably Mod or Full

If you only have 1 of each tube you're gunna want IC first for skeet and it will depend on the targets for 5 stand.  It might not be a bad idea to grab another IC tube before going b/c a 20ga mod is a pretty good handicap on the skeet range.

dukkillr gave good advice.  Remember, choke for smoke.  Even from the 16 yrd line you're definately going to want full in that 20ga.  I love small bores, but for trap, you really can't beat a 12 ga.

Good luck.  Just get out there and shoot. :D

Update....

Thanks for the replies so far.  Though this site, I found Colonial Arms, which seems to be well stocked in the choke tube market.  I picked up  skeet 1, skeet 2, and improved modified chokes for my 20 guage Baikal.

So now I am thinking...

Skeet Range= Skeet 1/Skeet 2
Trap= Improved Modified/ Full
5 stand= Modified/Improved Modified

Does this sound about right?

Thanks,

Smoky

you only shoot one shot at a time on standard trap.  Just shoot the 1 full.  Be prepared to swap out those tighter chokes on the 5 stand... I've shot some 5 stand rotations where the targets aren't very far or are coming towards you.

I have talked to some guys that are in competitive sporting clays and they say they would NEVER use a full choke for anything, not even for trap. They said it something to do with shot string.

What do you guys think?????????????

I think it's a good thing those guys shoot sporting clays and not handicap trap. In a word they don't know diddly squat.

Long years ago when I owned a skeet/trap range me and my buddies played a lot of games for money. One of them was on the trap range where we back up 37 yeards behind the trap house. That's right when we said PULL the target was already 37 yards away before it even left the trap arm. No body ever broke one with anything but a full choke. On a few occasions I ran five of five as it was a five shot winner take all match. Ya put up yer money and fired your five shots. Whoever broke the most took everyone's money and we did it again.
