Laminated Stock questions
« on: May 22, 2005, 09:11:29 AM »
I recently saw a Handi with gray laminated wood.   I have never seen any like that and do not recall anyone ever mentioning that color before.  I was just curious if it was a regular color has been discountinued or was a limited run.  It also prompted me to wonder how many color's NEF has used.  Anyone know?

Coalminer:  sent you an E-mail last week.  Thanks for asking.

Seems as though everyone is stumped on this one.  I thought someone may have a guess.

Anyway, I called NEF and spoke to Jennifer.  She said the gray laminate's were special ordered by a distributer at least five years ago.  They are/were not a regular production item and NEF has none in stock.

The gray lam stocks have been talked about here, recently in fact....there have been different special ordered stocks over the years, that's just one of em. Marlin still offers a similar stock, so it shouldn't be too hard for H&R to issue them again since Marlin owns H&R....

Here's a Honey Bee version that BigJeepMan bought...

And my Marlin 917V and 917VS with gray laminated stocks.

Thank you much for the info, Quicktoo.  I must have missed the post that discussed the gray stock.  I'll review more thoroughly in the future.

By the way, I saw a 12 ga. Pardner about 3 yrs ago at a Galyans that had a stock similar to the bumble bee version you posted.  Except that the design was not as spreadout.  It was like the current brown laminates that are on the Ultra's, tight thin lines.

There are several of us here that have been hoping that H&R will find a stock pile of old issued stocks laying in the shop sometime soon, like the UltraComp barrels that recently were found!!!

It would be great if they found a stash of old stuff somewhere.  Hey, maybe they'll come across some 7X57 barrel's.  We can only hope.

I'm considering refinishing my Ultra laminate stock.  I really like darker stocks, and the Handi Ultra laminate is too light.  It looks fine indoors or in the shade, but in the sun it looks almost like oak.  (yuck)

I've refinished stocks and done a good job in the past, I think I might try darkening this Handi stock to a walnut like appearance.

I've never tried to stain a laminated stock before, anything I should be aware of before I start?  I wouldn't want to "unglue" the laminate with the wrong type of stripper or solvent.
