What load works for you in you 209 x 50 Encore?
« on: November 28, 2004, 03:49:11 AM »
I just bought an Encore to use on whitetails.  What loads are working for you?

I was going to use 100 grns Pyrodex (two pellets) with a 250grn Barnes Sabot .

Thanks,

North Nick

That should be an excellent load.  I have used the 250gr Barnes sabot with cleanshot pellets back in MI for my 209x50.  They worked very well for me.  The new Hodgdon 777 looks to be a good powder too.  I took one doe with the 250gr barnes and it was very impressive.  looking at that bullet it looks like your shooting a small shotglass, such a huge hollowpoint.

Very good load,my brother shoots it out of his for 1" grps.I shoot 120 grns of T7 w/250 barnes and get .5-.75" @ 100.Ive seen more encores that favor magnum charges for accuracy!Good luck with it.

I have great accuracy using 100 grains of triple 7 and a 295 grain powerbelt, 1" @ 100 yards. When I hunted elk last year I used 150 grains of pyrodex and a 348 grain powerbelt and had 1.5" groups @ 100 yards. Mike

I have never had as much luck with the Pellets as I have with loose powder. I use 100 gr of 777 with the Barnes bullet. Sean

I shoot 3-50gr pellets of 777 behind a 250gr Hornady SST and it works very well.  You might consider Barnes new Spitfire MX expander muzzleloader bullet.  It has a much more streamlined hollowpoint as compared to the MZ expander.

Hornady 250 gr SST over 3 pellets of Pyrodex or 777. Can get honest 1" 3-shot groups at 100 yds. My partner has the same gun and gets the same accuracy. I've shot for groups out to 300 yds. Great groups. Now here's the catch. You need to clean between shots. Wet patch, dry patch, then bore butter patch. Think about it, your first hunting shot is always from a clean barrel. Also try putting your front rest as close to the action as feasible and keep a good consistent hold on the gun. Both my Encore and 450 Marlin respond to this.

T/C told me to use 100gr. pyrodex with a 250gr. shockwave, they shoot pretty good, I haven't shot a deer yet to see their performance but I hear they work real good.

I use 100 gr. of pyrodex (2 pellets), and a 300 gr. Hornady XTP ( 44 Mag. Bullet), in a sabat case, and I get a 1 1/2" group at 100 yards with a 5 shot group.

for me i foudn that a 245 grain powerbelt and using 777 in 100 grains using pellets got my best groups for me. i can set them in a 1" group and sometimes a 3/4" group as well. it is a very accurate shooting gun whne cleaned after each shot and make sure after you have shot it some to double chekc your stock and forend to make sure they are tight. sometimes they can loosen if you don't watch it.
your going to love the gun it is one outstanding shooter

Accutip or hollowpoint?

My ranges will most likely be under 100 yds, but may go out to 150 (Although I doubt I'd take that shot)

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH.  I USE KNIGHT HIGH PRESSURE SABOTS WITH .44 CAL (.4295 DIAMETER) 240 GRAIN BULLETS WITH 2 50 GRAIN PYRODEX PELLETS.  HAVEN'T TRIED THE 777 YET, HAVE HEARD GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT THOUGH.  GOOD LUCK AND KEEP TRYING UNTIL YOU FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR GUN.          MARK

Thanks for the input.

I used 2 - 50 grn Pyodex pellets with a 240 TC sabot.  Results were OK.

I need to play with it more to find what it likes.  Heck, that is half the fun!

The 2 pellets of Pyrodex and 250 gr Barnes load is the exact same load I have been using for several years with no problems. I have never had a deer go over 20 yds after being hit with it and I have killed quite a few with that load. Minute of Bambi load, 1.5" or usually less. At the range I'll run a spit patch through the barrel between shots. Works for me.

I have a 209. I stopped shooting sabot in it because it was swaging the plastic too much. I started shooting the power belt round that has the plastic skirt attached to the back of it....... with 2 pellets and the plastic swaging was gone. My accuracy also improved. I also do something that most traditionalist would probably scream about. I dont use ANY bore butter. I stopped using bore butter because it took so long to clean the throat in it. Everytime I used bore butter the intense chamber heat would turn the bore butter into a heavy thick  crust. I wanted to find another method. I started using moly bullet coating. Moly is dry from the start. It does not get crusty like a scab in the throat after each shot. I can load several more round before cleaning. After cleaning I swab the bore with a patch laidened with moly and coat the bore. I also roll the round in the moly before I load it. Now when I am ready to clean it only takes a little solvent and about 3 patches and it is done. NO MORE scrubing
and scrubing and scrubing  the throat area. NO MORE CRUSTY All I know is it works for me
good shooting

I had a wealthy friend who bought an Encore to hunt Elk in the mountains. He sent two back as being inaccurate. I am a quality engineer so the gun shop owner asked me to help out.

1. There are problems if you mount  a scope over 4 power, for a 3x9 etc. you will have to use Burris rings and shim about 20 thousand to have enough elevation at 100 yards.

2. After I got on target I did a design of experiments and foun that for full power 150 grain loads, the biggest factor on accuracy was pellets vs. loose pyrodex. The loose powder averaged 2 inch groups and the 3 pelllets 7.4 inch due to flyers.

3. The type of bullets did not to seem to effect anything but ease of loading, I preferred the powerbelts.

I practice with 110 gr. of Pyrodex select under a .45 cal speer .250 gr. JHP. (black sabot) and get 1" groups at 100 yards. I hunt with 110 gr. of the Pyrodex select and use the 250 gr. Barnes Expander MZ .45 cal rounds in black sabots and get the same 1" groups but with a slightly different POI than my practice loads. But the Barnes bullet kills deer with all the authority of a howitzer!

I am going to try some .475 caliber bullets/sabots soon and see how they group for me. I have found that the closer I get to the actual bore diameter with my bullets, the better my accuracy becomes.
I will let you know how the .475's do.

I played around a lot with different loads when I got my encore.  To make a long story short,  the best combo I found was with 245gr Powerbelts and 120gr of 777.  Usually around 1" groups, never measured because it was for deer not pds.  I tried all the way up to 150gr of 777 and my pattern went to hell.  Also It helped a lot to clean a bit between shots, not full blown cleaning but at least a wipe down.  I purchased some Eezox from Bullberry and am anxious to try it between shots and also if it can reduce the need for cleaning.  By the way, a Buddy of mine has an encore 209x50 also and he can shoot the same round with great accuracy with 150gr of 777. P me off!
