Put one on order Saturday.  Can't wait to get my hands on it.  Almost went with the 917VS that was in stock, but I figured for $20 more and a two week wait, might as well hold out for the flutes.   8)

Now, what optics am I going to put on it??

Congrats on the new VSF!  Optics for 17hmrs is a big topic at RFC...I have 4 hmrs, 2 Marlins, a CZ452 American and an NEF Sportster, a pair of 6-20x40 Scopechiefs are on the Marlin 917s, a 6-18x40 Swift is on the Sportster and the CZ wears a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40.....I started with less glass on the first 2 hmrs I owned and soon upgraded to what I have now, it's pretty hard to overscope a hmr, but real easy to underscope one......Here are 11 pages of the same question on one thread and a couple links to others, IIRC.

Probably your next question will be what to do about the trigger, so I'll head that one off.....you have 2 choices, shim and replace the a spring in the T-900 trigger that comes with the rifle for less than $1....or...buy the Rifle Basix drop in adjustable trigger for $65-$80 depending on who or if anyone has it on sale at the time....Some shooters are happy with the trigger shim, others aren't, shoot it first and see how you like it, few like the stock trigger, it's pretty heavy....

Thanks a million quickdtoo!

I ended up choosing my glass.  Decided to give Mueller a try.  I love the Bushnell Elite, but I'm hearing a lot of good things about Mueller.  Figured it was time I find out for myself.  Ended up going with the Tactical 4x16x50 with the mill dot reticle.  I'll let you know how I like it.  The red dot on the reticle looks like it's going to be a nice feature.  For a final price of $201.35 delivered to my door, I just had to try it.

Yah, I've heard of the trigger problems.  Figured I'd shoot it first and see, but something tells me I won't be happy.  Especially considering I have a Timney on my M77 22-250.  Is the Rifle Basix pretty easy to install?  I won't need a smith will I?

Rifle Basix lists triggers for the 2004 Marlins.  No mention of the 2005s.  I'm assuming there has been no change in 05?

The Mueller scopes are definately great optics, I have 4 of them, in fact, my first was an Eraticator mounted on my 917V....but I ended up with a pair of Scopechiefs that are more suited to my use as a carry rifle on the 917V(S) for ground squirrels. The Eraticator is now on my .204 Ruger Handirifle.

I don't think there are any trigger changes to the 2005 model, but I don't know that for a fact, I doubt RB knows for that matter, the VSF hasn't been out long enough. The trigger is a drop in with plain instructions but the adjustment can be a bit tricky. I installed one in both my 917V and 917VS, one was easy, the other took more time to adjust and some of those at RFC have had some trouble, too. The folks at RB are real helpful if you need to ask questions. You can download the instruction at the RB web site of you would like to check em out...Good shooting!!

I have 3 17's one HMR, one mach2 ans a handi rifle HMR I love them the handi less I have BSA sweet 17 scopes Now normally I think BSA scopes are crap but they have made a line just for 17's and they are really nice. you can get a 6X18x42 for under $100 and they are good for a non recoiling 17.  Just my two cents. I have heard lots of good about mueller and about swift and want to try them both. You will love the 17 they are tack drivers. one hole at 50 yards is not unreasonable. buy one of each brand of ammo first they do have a definite preference. Mine will group best with Federal than Hornady than CCI a distant 3rd I haven't tried Remington because Federal is so good and the cheapest and most explosive on ground squirrels.  also sight in at 100 yards than check 25 50 and 75 you'll be amazed how close they are and how well it groups at 100. and oh so flat.   good luck

Well, the .17 HMR is in my posession.  I haven't shot it yet. :cry:   If the weather cooperates, I should get a chance to touch a few off tomorrow.

My first impressions.  NICE.  What a beautiful rifle.  The grey/black lam. is real nice.  The fluted barrel was worth the wait.  The Mueller Tactical 4X16 looks like it was made for the rifle.

I have heard of feed problems.  I haven't seen them yet.  Grantid I haven't actually shot the rifel, but I've loaded the clip and cycled the entire thing probably a dozen times.  Zero hang ups.  Very smoothe.

The only problem - the trigger.  It's CRAP.  In fact, I'm disappointed that I didn't just order a Trigger Basix even before I got the rifle.  I thought I'd give the factory trigger a chance.  Mistake.  I dry fired it a couple times and it was miserable.  Now, I have to go to the range tomorrow with a $300 rifle and a $3 trigger.  MidSouth should have one here by the end of the week.

I'm hoping that I can swam it myself.

I'll let you know how the day goes tomorrow at the range.

Got some time at the range with the rifle today.  It was so fun to shoot.  Before I knew it, I had gone through 100 rounds - just like that.  I can tell the thing is going to be a shooter.

It was hard to get too excited though.  The trigger makes the Ruger M77 triggers look good....   Terrible.  

I shot some nice groups, but I know that the trigger is limiting this barrel.  Had the range master sit down and "squeeze" a few off.  He couldn't believe it.  He had never pulled such a heavy, creepy trigger.  

Can't wait for my rifle basix trigger to get here.  I just hope I can put it in with no problems.

Congratulations on your new gun. Sounds like you are setting it up right.
A Rifle Basix trigger will make your system complete. Once you you get used to a good adjustable trigger, it`s hard to go back. If you want a real slick RB trigger, lightly and carefully hone the mating surfaces taking care to not change the angles. Don`t over do it. It does not take much honing to get a good smooth trigger.
Honing the RB trigger is not necessary. Just having one installed is a real plus IMHO.

ps: You might want to run a mop coated with J & B bore paste completely through the barrel about twenty times. It will smooth the bore and speed the break in process.
After you have had time to get use to your new gun, let us know how it shoots.
