difference between 336XLR and 336SS?
« on: September 01, 2006, 06:34:19 PM »
Is there any real difference between these two model besides 4 inches of barrel and different stocks?  I came across an XLR at a show last weekend and it was sweet but just wondering if the 4" of barrel and laminate stocks is worth the extra $$.

Are there any other differences in machining or tolerances or anything at the factory?  Is it the same frame and action off the same machining with just a different barrel and stocks added on or is it actually a different product altogether?

Thats it....if you know/remember your Marlin history there was a delux version avalible. The 336A some time in the mid 50's till late 60's if memory serves...

Many people wanted this again offered and so the XLS was born!!

The 336 series have 1:10" twist Microgroove® Barrels (12 Lands & Grooves); the XLR 30/30 rifle has a 1:12" twist with Ballard Rifling (6 Lands & Grooves). The XLR has a Magazine in all calibers while the 336 series has a full length magazine tube. Additionally the XLRs has a much smother action, crisper triggers, (IMHO) a fluted bolt, and a fine Pachmayr® Decelerator recoil pad.

I know the XLR was made to exploit the Leverlution bullets from Hornady but what else is the difference in rifling for and what other impact does that difference have on bullet performance?  What other rounds would the Ballard rifling work best with vs the microgroove?

Basicly LEAD, Many people scauf at Micro groove rifling, but if kept clean its a fine product, just not great with lead unless they are might hard... ;D
