Glenfield MOD. 60
« on: May 23, 2005, 01:06:25 PM »
To day I found a Glenfield mod. 60 at a shop. It says on the bll it is made by Marlin. It is a little .22lr with a scope. It is semi-auto.

I have never heard of a Glenfield, the guy at the shop said it is about 28-30+ years old. The gun is in great shap. Blue is about 90-95% and the stock is the same.

I picked it up for $65.00 out the door. Is that about what this rifle is worth or did I get ripped? It looks just like my Marlin, so I guessed for 65 bucks I would give it a try.

Can anyone tell me about this rifle and where it came from? Are they hard to fine, or are they still made?

                    Thanks.
                          Dave.

I think you got a pretty good deal, considering that the good overall is around 90-95% condition, you basically got a brand new gun for $65, when the new ones today are going for around $120.

House.  You did pretty good. Its not unusual to see the Glenfield 60's for that price, but not in the condition you describe.  I've seen them used as high as $125 in the condition you describe.  Generally, the price will be closer to $100.  The $50-70 Mod 60's are for the most part good deals, but will most likely show that they are used.  K-Mart used to sell them for either $29.99 or $39.99 years ago with a Tasco 4X.  Surprisingly, the scope were very durable.  My sister, brother and father each have one of those versions and the scopes and rifles are still going strong.  They were bought in the mid-70's.

Marlin has been making these guns since the early 60's.  The Glenfield version is the retail store model. Sold at the local "Marts" and hardware stores. The stock may be shaped a little different and at times they stamped designs into the wood.  The model with the squirrel stamped into the pistol grip seems to be popular.

They are great little guns, but keep it clean.  The ones I have/had do not seem to like any regular ammo.  But I have not had much luck with the High Perf. .22's like the Stinger, Yellow Jacket, etc.

Just like the New England Handi Rifles, the Mod 60's can become addicting.  They are cheap, everywhere and good shooters.  There are also many version of them.  In the late 60's early 70's Marlin even made some that looked like the US M-1 Carbine. There are also different barrel lengths and magazine capacities.  I have a Marlin version with a walnut stock.  I don't think they make them with walnut any longer.

There is a ton of info on these rifles on this site.  You may also want to check out Rimfire Central.com and look under the Marlin/NEF forum.  Lots of info over there as well.

Good luck and enjoy!

Oops! Made a grammatical mistake.

I intended to say that they seem to LIKE all regular ammo, but not the hi po stuff.

Sorry.
