Stimson Resettable NRA Rifle Silhouette Targets...
« on: May 08, 2005, 04:07:10 AM »
Is anyone out there using them and if so I'd like to hear about your satisfaction with Mike's product.  Thinking about buying a set and getting an air program going and the ease and speed of resetting them would add to the amount of shooting we could do.

Thanks much,

Billy

Mike's a member at our club. We have his prototypes in 2 styles and we've been using them with complete satisfaction for about 3 years now.

They not only allow the match to run more efficiently, they also eliminate the problem of lost animals in the grass. (You'd be amazed how white chickens can vanish in 2 inches of green grass...especially when it's a little wet, a pcp gun flings them farther away from the stand than expected and they get stamped into the soft ground by people hurrying to reset.)

More important, it isn't necessary to have people down range. We repaint at the match midpoint and -- assuming that normal line safety is fully enforced   -- that eliminates most of the range safety issues.

If you get farther into it, let me know and I'll get you pics and material information for the Smallbore and Hunters Pistol resettable systems that we built and use.

Thanks Nomad, I know all about searching for &(*% chickens!

Do they pretty much eliminate stand hit scores (target falling from stand hit)?

Would love to see pics and plans for rifle silhouette resetables as well.  Right now I'm using a set of cast iron targets for rifle.  Resetting them sure does suck up the time.

My brother and I came up with a stand for pistol silhouette that took care of all of the above except they are not self resetting.  That's the bummer but I bet we could figure something out there as well.  For now we'd like to buy a set of Mikes and get the ball rolling ASAP.

Thanks again,

Billy

As I mentioned, we have 2 types of airgun reset stands. One is Mike's portable design and the other is a fixed stand that he modified for us to work as a reset. Since it's more convenient at our facility to use the portables for our weekly, evening, indoor air pistol program and the heavy, modded stands for our outdoor rifle matches, I can't comment on vibration drops from sporter and open rifles on the lighter portables. Let me see if I can get you information on that.

We have just instituted a weekly, Thursday evening 'fun' match using the smallbore rifle targets. (We set half the range at full distance for 'real' silhouette and half the range at short line distances for those who want 'easier'.) When I'm over there this week, I'll take pics of all our reset types (2 airgun styles, smallbore rifle and hunters pistol 1/2 scale smallbore and centerfire) and email them to you. PM me with your email if it's not posted.

IMO, you can't go wrong buying Mike's stands for airgun. OTOH, SB and Hunters Pistol stands are heavy enough that shipping would probably be prohibitive, even if he were prepared to make them. If you want to build the smallbore/pistol stands, or have them built, I'll put you in touch with the club members who designed and made them and they'll help you with details.

Billy,

Here are a couple of snapshots of the targets from our match two years ago:

The last pic in row 2 and the 3rd picture in row 3. They give you an idea of the size and shape, but don't really show the inner workings....

Just spoke with a friend who was shooting on Stimson resettable targets at a regional airgun match in the Houston area over the weekend.

He tells me that there were occasional vibration drops with the heavy springer, HV/PCP Sporter and Open guns but that they were infrequent and not considered a problem.

THANKS GUYS!  The pics and advice made my decision easier.  We're going to go with them.  I love seeing those critters fly but if it means more time shooting I might be able to live with giving that up once a month or so.  :-)

Hi David,

Thank you I'd love to be there but I already committed to the US Field Target Nationals in WA this summer and unless I win the lottery thats the only major match I can make it too.

On top of that we have some serious family health issues here at home and even the trip out west might end up being cancelled if things don't improve soon.

Thanks for the invite though!  You know we can always have a Nationals without the NRA.  The NRA isn't involved in FT and I think we'll have over a 100 shooters this year, not sure of the cut off number.

If you paint the bottoms of the bases a color like flourescent orange, they show up better at night, and probably in grass, too. Unless there are a lot of scraps from shoot-n-see type paper targets in the same area. Use white primer first ... the flourescent paint doesn't cover very well.

Credit for this idea goes to Drew Seutter.

Those targets are the second generation, I now have a 3rd generation where the pivot point for the animals is farther back stopping almost all non hit falling.
