About 6 months ago I bought a traditions 45 cal,new in the box at a good deal. up to that point all i had were 50 cals and a 32.shooting nothing but PRB, I want to try some conicals for deer hunting out of this rifle,keeping the max distance around 40 yds,that is about the farthest shot i will get where i hunt. any suggestions on loads bullets and so forth. thanks in advance.

Dispatch...................I think that rifle of yours is a good rifle,one of my friends just got one and it seems to shoot rather well with PRB. I am not sure about the twist rate but do think it might be about 1:66 or fairly close. I dont have the spects in front of me to look at. If it is 1:48 or so I think I would try the Buffalo Bullets that are all lead and have a beeswax type of lub on them. Again,I dont have the guns specs with me but 60 grns of Black over one of these will put a deer down at that range rather well. Each rifle is a critter unto its own so you alwso might want to give some of thier Bal-ets or something like this a try also. They should work to a good degree in the twist rates that I mentioned above......your gun might do better or worse....at any rate......they are good thumpers on game. stay safe.King

you may want to look at the REAL CONICAL out of that 45 cal. I myself like to use black powder in 3f made by Goex in all my guns,also a wad under the conical may help,there is a guy over on e bay and he also has his onwn web site ,BLACK JACK HILL

You didn't mention which Traditions gun you have or the rate of twist, but I also like the Lee REAL bullets. I don't have a 45 but the 50s are accurate in my guns and very quick and easy to load. If you have a slow twist the lighter weight should shoot OK, if you have an inline with a fast twist try the heavier. I cast my own, but as lonewolf7396 stated there is a website where you can order them ready made. If you do a search on this forum you should be able to find the site. I use a mixture of crisco and bees wax as the lube.

Thanks guys for all the info.The rifle that i bought is a hawkin style 44 inches long with a 26 inch barrel. On the barrel it says traditions 45 cal blk powder only. it has a color case hardened lock,brass but plate brass nose cap,brass barrels for the ram rod, the stock is hardwood of some kind.but has a bueatiful grain.over all it is a very nice rifle.also has double set triggers. but it does not say what the barrel twist is. I thought that i would contact traditions and see what the can tell me about the barrel twist. I have got a catalog from traditions that is about 2 yrs old,this rifle is not in it.Any info that any of you would be greatly appreiciated.thanks in advance.

Contacted traditions about my 45 cal. the name of it is a frontier it has a 1-66 twist barrel. so i guess i will shoot prbs out of this one to. thanks to everyone that responded to my questions.

Now Just cause it's a slow twist doesn't mean it wont shoot a conical of some type accurate enough to kill deer :-) My old CVA 45 shoots very well with hand cast Maxi balls and has taken quite a few deer.
Don't give up before trying. Your rifle may not shoot them well .. But then again .. It May.. You'll never know without given it a shot :grin:

REAL bullets were made in two weights/sizes. The shorter size will probably work in the 1:66 twist as long as heavy charges are not used. Start with a low/medium charge - 40 grains 3f - and work up until you loose accuracy.

hi all i have a pedersollie 54 tryon rifle its an old model with a .530 bore and groves .542, its ment to have a 1:66 twist but mine is an erley 80/s model which i have a catalog fore, and it say 1:48 twist . well i started shooting real bulets and was a real tack driver so i got a lee .533 mini mould tride that again a tack driver but had to swob after every shot . so i got a custom sizeing die frome lee .529 and still have tack driver 415 grn mini 120 grn c&h black powder mv is 1585 fps average 1-1/2 inch group of sticks at 50 meters, so never no untill you try all load combos. i allso holow point the mini grate on pigs no dear here in west oz
