Remington Super Magunm Express Extraction problem
« on: January 19, 2003, 01:16:32 PM »
I received a Remington 870 Super Magnum with 3 1/2" chamber this Christmas. Took it out and fired it and found it won't extract cartridges part of the time. The spent cartridges appear to be in a bind. The gun will pull the edge of the rim off the cartridge (after some effort) leaving it in place. The cartridge then can be easily popped out with a wooden dowel. I took the Shotgun back to the store, they gave me a different barrel but the problem remains. I have since sent the gun to a Remington repair center. Have not heard back from them. Has anybody out there experienced similiar problems or have an idea what could be wrong? I have had several Remington's over the years put this experience has turned me off on them forever. It's hard to believe their quality control would allow a gun like this out of the factory. BTW, Remington nor the store would exchange the gun for a new one.

Are there any marks on the case??  It almost sounds as if the chamber is bad or rusty, but in two seperate barrels??  I wouldn't think so..  Could it be the receiver is not holding the barrel straight and the bolt is thus not pulling straight with the chamber?.  That would cause a binding situation..  I have never heard of this problem before.  Please keep us informed of the outcome!!!  from the gunnut69

I received the got the gun back from the Repair center.   The gunsmith wrote on the repair order that he had found the chamber to be "a little rough".  I took that to mean he though it was a lot rough.  He stated he had polished it up and that it works OK now.  I examined the chamber and it looks like he really went after it.   I ran some of the fired cases that had previously been sticking and they all extracted although one still came out pretty hard.  I have not shot the gun since it has returned but will shortly.  From what I have been hearing from other owners of this particular model that this is not an uncommon problem.  I still find it hard to believe that Remington allows guns like this out of the factory (two separate barrels in this case).  I have had good luck previously with Remington products but after this experience I will probably look at another brand.  What I found most irritating was that neither the store nor Remington would simply replace a defective product, no questions asked.  Instead you have to suffer the shipping headaches and being without the firearm while they try to get right.  I'll keep you posted how it works after if is fired.   5090

Please keep us advised of your progress.  A rough chamber can make extraction difficult but it really takes a lot to rip off a case head.  the real kicker was that even though hard to extract it could be easily punched out with a rod..  This still sounds like an alighnment problem to me..  If the outside of the barrel extension is badly misaligned with the chamber, that would create a situation upon firing where the extractor was pulling on the round from an angle while the rod would be working paralell to the chambered case...

Have seen this problem alot from a different brand, when the mossberg 835 first came out this seemed to happen with every gun that left our store, the cure was simple recut with finish reamer then polish with a flex-hone, this cured the problem.  So now Remington is going thru the same thing, it is truly a shame!

Well guys, today I was able to fire the 870 super mag express to check the repair.  It performed flawlessly.  I shot about 40 rounds and all extracted very nicely.  Soooo, it appears that if you are having the same problem an extensive chamber polishing appears to be the fix.
BTW, Remington promised me to reimburse me for the shipping charges to return the shotgun.  I sent in the required paperwork over a month ago and have not heard a word.  I guess actions speak louder than words.

Those 870 Express shotguns must be really getting rough!!  Remington's quality control has really gone to pot.  They'll end up on the scrap heap if they don't get their act together soon....  One more question.  When they were polishing the chamber, was the rear of the chamber rounded or radiused in any way??

No, the rear of the chamber does not appear to have been rounded during polishing.  I can see a little ripple about halfway in the chamber,  however it does not appear to be casing any problems.

Despite the problems with the gun I still like it, that's why I bought it in the first place.  It is unfortunate that defective examples can make it thru quality control and cause everyone a little grief.

It would have been interesting to cast that chamber to find the problem..  I would have bet on an egg shaped chamber to create that much resistance to extraction, especially if it came out easily with a rod..
