Hunter loses license for decade

N.H. man was acquitted of criminal charges in death of man last year

CONCORD, N.H. A man acquitted of criminal charges after fatally shooting a fellow hunter last year has been banned from hunting in the state for 10 years

Steven Laro, 50, of Concord, was acquitted of negligent homicide in the January 2004 death of Robert Proulx at Corbin Park, a private game preserve in Croydon. Laro said he mistook Proulx, 58, for a boar.

In the end, game commissioners agreed Laro a former police officer and FBI-trained firearms instructor didn't properly identify his target before shooting.

I am firmly of the opinion that in ALL cases of failure to identify target correct which results in the death of a human the shooter should be charged with FIRST DEGREE MURDER.

Clearly they fired with the intent of killing the target. The target turned out to be a human, therefore they intended to kill a human. That's the definition of FIRST DEGREE MURDER.

There is NO EXCUSE for shooting a human and claiming you THOUGHT it was something else.

unless he was wearing a boar costume and rooting around on the ground and the shooter had open sights and was 200 yards away, i say Graybeard has it right on lol.

A good friend of mine here in Maine lost his farther many years ago to a hunting accident. That is what it was, A accident by a careless inperfect human. He harbors no ill will against the man. It was not first degree murder. I have to disagree with you Gyarbeard. I understand. But disagree. Elevating every bad thing that happens to first degree this and that is not the anwser. I have missed many deer because I am so careful but don't want a good man to go to prison for a mistake. Emotions run high.

I have to agree with GB here. Especially in the case that this was an ex FBI Firearms Instuctor. Makes you wonder about the Agents this man trained. Are these trained agents as STUPID as their teacher. A half blind teen-ager would know, not to shoot if he could not Properly Identify his target. A MAN does not even remotely resemble a BOAR in ANY WAY. I pass on hunting shots all of the time. Not just because of being able to identify Species.....but looking close enough to see whether it has horns or not. In my mind...this man WASeither CRIMINALY NEGLIGENT...OR..This was a case of Premeditated MURDER disguised as a hunting accident. TRAINED EXPERT FBI FIREARMS INSTUCTORS DO NOT MISTAKE A HUMAN SILLOQUETTE FOR A PIG! This sounds more like a 'HIT' to me. Time will tell....

Not that this is an appropriate case:

It is quite common to be aquitted of a game violation in court and still get your license suspended by Administrative Action. If this happens to you make certain that you have the Judge rule (in writing) that the Game officals cannot suspend or revoke your hunting privilege since you were determined by the Judge to be innocent.
