My first Mosin 91/30!
« on: July 03, 2012, 03:17:01 PM »
Just got my first Mosin today. I am super excited about it. I picked up a spam can of ammo while going through the CA 10-day waiting period. I'll be shooting it this Sunday. Can anyone tell me what I don't already know of this gun based on the markings? I know it's a Tula. Is it a decent one?

I took my time to pick the best rifle I could find, based on the research I read online. The bore rifling is immaculate (and it's not counter-bored). I can hardly believe the rifle is 70 years old.

You should be exited about it, it's a gorgeous rifle.  Let us know how it shoots.

Sweet. Set rear sight all the way back, shoot a group at same point of aim at fifty yards, adjust up some, shoot some more, adjust, and be on. Mine shoots fine. I like 'em, the 91/30 - better that the M44, which has more muzzle blast than I care for... singes eyebrows..

Just clean your bore really good with soapy warm water after shooting that corrosive primed ammo. Most of these rifles will shoot 6 to 12" high at 100 yards with the back sight set all the way down. That is the battle sighting to be able to hit center mass of a man out to 300 arsins (SP?) Russian measurement.

I have done all sorts of work with these rifles and most of them will really shoot with a little shimming of the action and making new front sight post and some trigger work and handloading. They like 174 to 180 gr bullets the proper diameter .311  or .312. 50 grs AA 4350, CCI 200 primer, and the use of a Lee Factory Crimp Die makes a tack driving load.

Congratulations on your purchase. I got mine around the first of the year and I really enjoy shooting it. Recoil isn't bad, but the steel butt plate can punish you after 50 rounds or so.
Don't forget to post your range results.

I'd heard that many times, and shot1 may or may not be accurate. Do this at range: make sure everything tight (esp screw right behind bolt) and set rear sight to 100. Shoot 3-4 shots at fifty. If low, move to next 1/2 mark up, repeat. and so on. Mine is dead on at fifty yardsn with with rear sight set on hashmark right below 3 on left side of sight. So, don't sweat the business about it not being on until you try it.

Let us know how it comes out.

10 day waiting period??? For the life of me I don't know why any gun owner would live in Kalifornia...

You are going to love that rifle. Got one earlier this year and it is very accurate, honestly I would feel comfortable shooting a deer at 300 yards with it.
The suprising thing about it is that it shoots better with the bayonette on than off.  With bayonette on 4" high and dead center, with it off 7" high and 3 inches right.  Both groups were just over an inch and had similar results at 100 yards, probably closer to 1 1/2" groups with the bayonette on 8" high, with the bayonette off - didn't hit the target... Clearly this gun shoots better with the bayonette, which is fine, I kind of like the balance when shooting off hand with it on.

Just for fun and because I was shooting so high, I ran the target out to 300yds.  This is what blew me away, I shot 8 shots and every single shot was well inside a paper plate and the 4 center shots would have hit a grapefruit!  Still 4" high, but pretty dog gone good group with a baseball bat for a front sight.  I have bolt guns with variable scopes that fight me at that range.

You might be in trouble if you live in Kommie Kalifornia. Don't they have laws against ammo that has steel in the projectiles? A lot of the surplus stiff does. You may have to turn around and sell the stuff you bought in another state.

Of course, Now you need the M38, M44, And 91/59 carbines. Not to mention the American built ones, the New England Westinghouse and Remington versions. Then you can start in the Finn models. It's a never ending addiction!
