My wife was shooting my Marlin 39A Golden Mountie. She was sitting at a shooting bench on the 25 yard range. I was standing behind her using 10x binoculars to spot her shots. When she would fire I could see the bullet going down range.

From the right angle, with good light, you can see most any bullet in flight, from rimfires and black powder to the centerfires. Just recently there was a show on the History channel showing military marksmen shooting 300 win mags at 500 yds IIRC, the bullets in flight could easily be seen in several clips. Was at a black powder silhouette shoot once, standing above and behind the shooting line, the bullets in flight were real easy to see. Nice shiny projectiles are the easiest to see, the sun needs to be just at the right angle to your view, also. :wink:

Next time try that again and just set your 10x binoculars a little out of focus. You can see almost any bullet going down range (or the vapor trail). Spotters for Snipers use that trick alot......

I once had 7.65mm machine gun fire traveling over and around my head. The tracers were VERY visable. It was most definately NOT more comforting to actually see the rounds, that's for sure. I've also had the dubious pleasure of watching morter rounds arching over as well. No fun there either.

When I shoot my .17 HMR at the range, I can actually see the distortion the bullet causes through my scope. It looks like a very fast invisible smoke ring heading towards the target. The first couple of times I saw it, I thought it had to do with heat shimmers or something like that. It is like something out of The Matrix. Quite cool.
