New .223 AI!
« on: April 15, 2005, 02:11:47 AM »
Well, I finally got around to fixing the chamber on my Savage 112 BVSS. From the factory the chamber was crooked, and the throat was off center as well as way too big. (.226"). I cut 3/4 inch off the back end of the barrel, indicated to bore in with a gauge pin, rounded out what was left of the chamber with a boring bar, and recut a Ackley Improved chamber.  Took it to the range last night with some S&B 55gr. FMJ ammo to fireform cases. In this rifle this used to be 4-6MOA ammo. This time it started out at about 3 MOA, after a box of it was downrange it was holding 3/4 MOA. Quite an improvement, now I can't wait to load up some Matchkings and see what this thing will really do! Anybody else out there playing with a .223 AI? Any favorite loads for a fast twist (1:9) barrel? It used to be best with 69 gr. bullets, holding 1/2 MOA - can't wait to see some little bugholes out at 200M and beyond!

Well, I got out to the range with some loads using the fireformed Ackley cases and 69gr. SMKs, 75gr. Hornadys and some unknown 55gr. softpoints. The 55gr. were going 3650 fps with AA2230-C powder, but they didn't get far. Most blew up in the air before 25 yards. The 69gr. SMKs were going 3200 fps, at 100yds chewed out one hole. At 200 yards they were holding 3/4 inch. The Hornadys were loaded much lighter, going 2800 fps with WW748. They were holding right around an inch at 200, and hits on a beer can at 400 was pretty easy. Looks like this thing is a winner! I just need to find some varming bullets that won't blow up in the air and I'll have 22-250 performance with about 8 grains less powder and didn't have to buy a new bolt face. Yee-haw!

I HAVE A SAVAGE SINGLE SHOT IN .222MAG IMP. I,M LOADING 28GR. OF H-322 BEHIND A 40GR. BALISTIC TIP, FOR 3850FPS. AND IT,S VERY ACCURATE! IT WILL SHOOT QUARTER INCH GROUPS ON CALM DAYS! (AT 100YARDS)
THE FUNNY THING IS, I LOAD A 22-250IMP. WITH 40GR. THATS TWELVE MORE GRAINS FOR A 300FPS DIFFRENCE????

Both my 223AI have 1/14 twist so won't be much help on the heavier bullets.  I've hear some good things about berger 22 cal 73 gr bullet also the 70gr LVD.  If your looking to get 22-250 performance using appr 10grs of powder less need the 22br or 22dasher.  Well good luck.
