Speer Grand Slams?
« on: June 01, 2005, 05:47:02 AM »
I'm wondering what people who have used them on big game think about Speer Grand Slams?  It seems they are almost never discussed.  Is there a reason for that?  I have two rifles, a 375 H&H and a 308, that seem to  shoot well with them.  How do they perform on big game (I'm reallly curious about elk and larger-sized animals)?

Thanks for any stories that can be passed on.

I picked the 285 grain grand slams for 375H&H for an upcoming buffalo hunt.  They are very highly regarded and are considered comparable to Nosler Partitions in performance.  Unfortunately I have not used them yet on a hunt.

Speer vs: Nosler Partitions

I'm sure that Speer grand slams will get the job done. Since the Nosler Partition seems to be the gold standard that bullets are compared against, I tend to use the Nosler Partitions. I have been moving toward the Nosler Accubonds and the Hornady Interlocks since they've come out. They give me a tad more accuracy than the Partitions.

I use them interchangably with NP's.  Whichever one the rifle shoots best.  On a light bodied animal like perhaps an antelope or a small white tail, the GS might be a bit too hard for good expansion.  I've never had a problem but then I "shoot for the exit hole".

Go down to the forum on Africa hunting and ask the professional African guide what he thinks of them.    (I got a bunch of them left for my '06)

I used some when they first came out in a 270 and really like they.  In the mid 80's I had my first 30-338 build with a 1/12 twist thinking I used the 165gr GS had a nice easy shot at  a buck bullet when right in no expansion in fact I hit him twice very little blood some other hunter got him  and that was the last time I every used a GS.  I called and talked the them but really never got a clear answer.
