Took my 12 year old nephew out this mornig in the nasty weather to give it a try. We just returned at 10:30 soaked and birdless. He looked at me when we were leaving and said. I weigh 50 pounds more soaked but I will still remember this as my first turkey hunt and even if we didnt see a turkey, I had fun being out here. I said so did I and I thought to myself there is a hunter for life. On the way home I told him to call his mom and tell her he got a turkey but was in jail because he had no idea it was illegal to hunt turkeys in the super market. We both had a laugh on that one.

My nephew and I were out this morning got a late start left his place for our walk in about 9 am. That was when the fog lifted enough to see good. Anyway about 9 30 we were in place with a jake and waiting hen decoy out. We had not been calling just sitting and listening and chewing the fat a bit. We hear a gobbler in the woods to our left about maybe 40 or 50 yards in. We were about 60 yards from the edge of the woods so we had a good 100 yards to get this bird in. We still sat silent. He gobbled a second time and was right to the edge of the woods. I figure he was on the edge of the woods and saw the decoys. I clucked once waited a bit and did a purr and he responded again. He popped out into the field and he was no monster by any means, but to my 12 year old nephew anything with a beard is a keeper. As we were watching him move around we heard a buzzling and 2 dirt bikes came down the trail and spun around right in front of us and sat there. The turkey took off and I stood up and thanked them graciously for ruining our hunt. I knew both of them from hunting classes I had taught and told them both I would be stopping over to see their parents to talk about trespassing on the private property we here hunting on. My nephew took it well, but, I knew he was disappointed. Lets just say after we walked the mile or so back, they will not be back there with their bikes again.
