Got my .500 S&W Yesterday....
« on: July 02, 2005, 07:52:27 AM »
All I can say is wow!  I got the regular 8 3/8" model.  With all that I have read I was starting to worry that it might have more recoil than I could handle.  However, after a 30 round session this morning I am excited about this revolver.  The recoil was much less than I thought it would be.  I have a 4" Smith in .44 Mag that kicks harder.  The .500 is more of a stiff shove than a snap type recoil.  Can't wait to take me a hog with this one!  I can't wait till I get all my reloading stuff for this big one either, the cartridge cost is a bit much for the amount of shooting I do.
Flinching Due to Heavy Recoil, is only a state of Mind!!

Cost of shooting

The cost of shooting is the main reason I don't have one.  I almost bought one the other day at the gun shop, but opted for the 44 SRH instead.  I was very surprised at how balanced the 500 with a 10" barrel was though.  The feel of it in my hands was almost enough to make me get it, but I also like to shoot alot, and the 500 is alot to shoot even once I'm sure.

I have the 500 also with 8 3/8" barrel. I put a scope on mine. The extra weight helps cut recoil. I shot a 1.5"  3 shot group at 100 yds with the 400 gr bullet. I plan on hunting deer with it also. I really like my 500.
Congradulations! :D

Shot one for the first time this weekend. Was not as much recoil as i was bracing for. Really packs a wallop on the 12" dia x 3/4" thick steel plates. Out of the box my buddys dad picks it up and pops the plates at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards with open sights. Really impressive gun.

The 500 S&W is real sweet. I`ve got scope mounts on mine and am waiting for a 2 1/2 x 8 Leupold for on it. I plan on useing it for a stand gun this deer season, but the weight of the darn thing, I think I`ll carry my .454 Red Hawk when driveing, I`m waiting on a 2 1/2 x 8 Leo for it too. Ordered 2 of them at the Gander Mount. grand opening in Dayton and still waiting on them. About to e-mail the company and see if I can get them on the ball.
