Author Topic: bringing a 760 back to life?? (Read 1027 times)

hello everyone. I am new to GBO and this place seems like a good place to come to gather information. OK, here it is, I have an older Rem. M 760 in 30-06 that I want to do a little bit of work on to make it into a good shooting hunting rifle. I have read (on here) about ordering a spring kit for the trigger to lighten it up some, (for those who have done it, has it worked well?), I have e-mailed the man in charge of the springs to get a package sent to me. More importantly I was wondering what type of treatment I can do to the bore. It is in pretty good shape right now, but think of it as a "re"-break in process, what type of cleaning products and methods would you folks reccomend.

I am pretty familiar with these rifles and like them quite a bit for general purpose hunting/shooting, so any help you guys can provide me with to bring this beauty back to life would be greatly appreciated.

First welcome to GBO. The spring kit will lighten the trigger pull but won't help with the spongy feeling. Only a trigger job will straighten that out. Shooters Choice or any other good name brand cleaner will work. Sweet's 7.62 solvent will make shorter work out of getting the copper out of the bore but don't let it soak in the bore more than say 15 min. so you don't etch the steel. Get a new bronze bore brush and a nylon one ( if you use a solvent with ammonia like Sweet's) . A good thorough cleaning will probably take care of your needs without a break in.

thank you for the welcome and the info. I have asked some gunsmiths about the trigger on this rifle and they said that if it was a 7600 they would be able to work on it but since it is a 760 there wasn't much they can do? I thought that was a bit strange but never really questioned it much.

I hope the guy with the spring kits responds back to my e-mails soon! I want to do the necassary tweaks and get out to do some shooting!

Have a look at Shilen, or Douglas barrels web page......I think you'll be suprised about what they have to say on cleaning.........seems a certain amount of copper in the barrel might not be a bad thing.........

if I take the factory iron sights off this gun can I use the same screws to fill in the holes or are there different screws to do that and where would they be available?

If you take off the iron sites you will need different screws. The old ones will be too long and stick up. Any smith will have the right screws. When you get the knew screws, you might want to get gold ones. It spices up the gun a bit and if the rifle ever gets stolen, you have a way to distinguish it from others.

I was also wondeing if you can put a newer ( M 7600) stock onto a M 760. I like the monte carlo stocks as I had a bit of a problem with looking through the scope that was on a M 760. Maybe I will just get good and low rings though? hhmmmm.....

I bought one of the spring kits and installed it. Did not seem to make a lot of difference in trigger pull. The seller is no longer on E-bay, but that may just be cause E-bay did not like him selling gun parts.
