How many you "RENDEZVOUS" ?
« on: May 19, 2005, 09:09:30 PM »
I mean 'vous" are nation wide. Some call them "rondy's".
Those kind of camps are a great place to share traditional information, comparisons and "learn".
I set camp ta near 5-6 vous, and be a walk-in 2-3 more each year.

That's how I learn about  'different guns', different powders',different camps and others way's,. It's a great way to get 'hands on" experiance!

I ain't askin 'bout "Nationals" and the big-bucks,big camps  stuff,,,,,,,,,,I mean local 'vous",,,,
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

I like to go to as many as I can but I seem to have a problem with finding out about the ones around the area until it's too late.

Without being in some sort of club, it seems ronny information is hard to come by, or at least in my neck of the woods.

Don't know the best place to get ronny info but would sure like to.

I used to do the Mountain Man routine and I thoroughly enjoyed it but haven't participated in the last 3-4 years.  My interestes have digressed and I'm currently putting together all the goodies for the period of time from the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812.   Matter of fact all I need are some "mockersons" and I'm properly attired.   This weekend there is a gathering about 60 miles from me but I'm unable to attend.  There are quite a few within that distance of me.

Nothing like that close to my home. A couple hours drive can get me to some Rev-War re-enactors. And although most of the guys I work with hunt, all of them think a muzzleloader is something you put pellets and jacketed bullets into. Makes me want to puke, just talking to them. Needless to say, I'm not very popular amongst these educated (Outdoor Channel) rednecks.

Ramrod....unfortunately that seems to be a sign of the times.  I have my own 100 range in my back yard so I rarely go to public ranges.  When I do there are usually some guys there with the modern, pelletized, shotgun primer firing, plastic stocked, scoped, ugly, wannabe muzzleloaders.  My only satisfaction is when one of them inevitably says to me, "oh....you're shooting a real muzzleloader".  That would be fine except then they almost always take off on a diatribe of how great their rifle is compared to mine.  I never argue, wouldn't do any good if I did.  My usual comment is something to the effect that "yup, your gun shore is a fine one....when did they start makin' that kind?".  That usually gives the person an opportunity to give me a 15 year history of the modern muzzleloader, if he's even aware of it.  It's amusing that the person hardly takes his eye off my longrifle.

For me I suppose it's enough to know that my rifles are just as accurate, if not more so, just as capable of taking game, are worth more than I paid for them, beauty and character aren't even part of the equation and there is no history whatsoever attached to their rifle.

Sorry.....didn't mean to take off on my own diatribe.  I just don't care for modern in-lines.....

You guys that like to "ronny" and dress like old trappers, were you aware that there is a greybeards trapping forum? We all trap with modern methods but except for better trap designs and living conditions, things havn't changed much. If you are interested in fur you should give it a read once in a while.

hey danny..

I am aware of it but thanks for the reminder.  I used to trap every chance I got but haven't gotten the chance in about 12 years.  Kind of a shame as our otter are way too thick and I see where otter bring pretty good money now with China buying so many.  I still get Fur, Fish and Game and follow the market according to them.  I think I'll get my traps out this fall and just set some land sets on our place....lots of ridge runnin' coons around!

Just in case....you got any good otter sets?  I never got to trap for them.

I live in Kansas. Bobcats are decent price wise and trap a few of them along with coyotes. I trap Ks Neb and Wy mostly. Never trapped where otter were legal. Took a guy from Mo cat trapping last season though in exchange for an otter trip this winter. Will be my first go round with them. You post on the trapping forum though or maybe just PM the moderater. Goes by Bogmaster. Has a trap supply buisness. His name is Tom Olson and he is one of the top water trappers in the country. He can help. Might try www.trapperman.com. Several guys there can help too.

There a lot of trapping conventions around the country. They are geared toward mordern furharvesting with a lot of equipment being sold traded etc along with trapping know how demo's and disscussion. The big thing is the comraderie. Wether you camp or rent a motel room you are sure to enjoy yourself if hanging out with modern practioners of woodsmanship interests you.

lostid, I used to 'vous.  Now I'm getting into an earlier era and enjoying immensely the research and putting together of my kit.

Danny, I went to a couple MTA rondesvous many years ago.  they were great fun, and as you said, would be of interest to anyone interested in the fur trade on either side of 1800.  The wife and kids, the kids were little at the time, all thoroughly enjoyed themselves also.
