Finally got to weighing the power and shot I put in my 12 gauge shells. Now you have to remember that both my brother and I have had rotator cuff surgery so we have to have light loads. Even the lightest of the Winchesters are too hard on our shoulders. Doc doesn't even want us to be shooting scatter guns but what he doesn't know won't hurt us. :wink:

I've got the MEC adjustable bar and while loading up a 100 shells (gotta keep my stockpile full--match was last weekend) I came up with these weights:
powder: Red Dot; about 9.9 to 10 grains. This is about a 17 bushing even though I'm using an adjustable bar
shot: #9 comes out to .7 oz and I use an .125 over shot card

The over shot card really makes my crimps look good. Don't know why but for me it does the trick.

Do you ever have any problems with the knock downs using that load? If not, it sure sounds like a good one. Nice and gentle for folks with shoulder problems, or smaller shooters.

I've found that black powder loads are actually easier on my shoulder than smokeless loads with the same amount of shot. Recoil velocity is slower, so it gives my big blubbery frame more time to roll with the shot gun. In my 20 gauge, I'm using 65 grains of Goex Fg, a Remington wad with the cushion section removed, and my bushing is supposed to be throwing 7/8 ounce of #7 1/2. I've weighed the powder to double check, but not the shot. By removing the cushion from the wad, but still using the gas seal and shot cup, I have room to get a good crimp on 2 3/4" hulls. My wife likes this load a lot, and she's less than half my size.

Actually they do a nice job on the knockdowns. You do have to aim, though :wink: and hit them on the top half. But haven't had that problem.

My brother and I figure that a missed knockdown now and then is well worth not destroying what's left of our shoulders.

Besides, being able to pick my nose using my right hand, elbow and shoulder is very important to me, too. :grin: :grin:

I always thought your avatar was an actual picture of you, but if you can pick your nose with your elbow or shoulder, I don't see how that picture could be accurate!

That ability must be the result of another injury you haven't shared with us yet.

Oops, sorry for the confusion.

When I raise my right index finger to my nose I have to move my elbow and shoulder, so rotator cuff surgery was important for that :wink:

I tried to use my big toe but found that my big belly made that an impossibility :wink: :wink:

such is the lives of the very old...
