barrel wants to jump open

I have owened my handi rifle for 3 years. After a year or so I noticed the barrel would fly open after i fired a round. I also noticed it was sloppy after I chambered the round. To fix the problem I put a paper shim in the hinge. Now it has worked fine for 2 years. any suggestions? FYI it is chambered in .243 and i shoot 100 grain bullets.  thanks in advance,             tvc15

Are you shooting factory loads or ??
Was your rifle new when you got it or did you get it used?

:-D , Welcome aboard tvc 15. With some further info I am sure those on this site can help you out with the problem. What 2 letters do the serial number begin with? Are the last 3 numbers of the serial number scratched on the barrel lug? If not are there any numbers there or no numbers at all?....<><.... :grin:

O.K. here we go. the gun was purchased new. I have only shot factory ammo, usually federal. the sreial# 654

OK, with the first 2 letters HN it looks as if your gun was manufactured in 1999 and H&R will currently fit ALL barrels to that frame, both "low intensity" (shotgun, .223, 30-30, 45-70, etc. and "high intensity" barrels, 30-06, .270, 7mm-08, .308, .280 etc...
Most people don't disclose the entire serial number just for security reasons and if you want just go back and edit the first 3 numerals with x's. The last 3 numbers  on the barrel lug match the last 3 numbers of the serial number so it appears that gun came from the factopry that way ot the barrel was factory added at a later date, both are good.
H&R's warranty is for one year but their customer service is top notch and for a safety issue like this they would fix it for free. Just call them during business hours and explain the problem and I am sure they will take care of it. Otherwise, first clean, clean, clean.....Check the area around where the barrel locks up into the reciever and the area of the ejector. Does it do it with all ammo or just a particular load/brand? Has it done it since new in 1999?.. If so has it gotten worse with time?....<><.... :grin:

No,  it did not do it when I first shot it.  I have used a paper shim on the pin for several years, so i don't know if it has gotten worse. i assume not. I went back in the forum and read the same question, the response was very broad, everything form sending the gun back, using brass shim stock to putting a small weld on the barrel lug. Do you think using shim stock on the pin instead of paper would be a permanent fix? I don' plan to switch out barrels.  thank you so much.

TVC15, Welcome aboard!!! :D  I would send it in to H&R for them to fix it. Give em a call or email them asking if they will fix it even though it's out of warranty. Now's a great time to do it, they have a 2 week turn around on barrel fitting so the wait shouldn't be long....

If the condition you describe is a fitting issue and you send it back to H&R chances are they will fit it with a new barrel.  I would suspect the barrel lug would wear not the pin so their quickest fix would be a new barrel.  A new barrel is a gamble it could shoot better or worse and may or may not like the loads you currently shoot.  Another possibility is that the barrel catch is worn.  Is there any barrel movement when the action is closed?  If so the catch is probably the culprit I would expect H&R to replace it free of charge.  I had a barrel catch go bad on a 243 Handi a few years ago but mine never actually popped open upon firing it just had some slop in it.
