Box Calls, Your Opinions Needed

I am going to try my hand at making my own box calls.  Got some excellent furniture grade lumber, cedar, walnut, oak, and maple. to work with.  I have 2 different instructions designs to work from - single & double sided, and I would like to know the Pros & Cons of both?  What are their good points and bad?  Which do you prefer and why?  Lawdog

I like the double. If one side messes up you have a backup.

I prefer a two sided (V) shaped box,
each side will give a slightly different tone, even if the sides are made alike....each side will have its own pitch... they can also be used as a locator call by imititing a gobble.

A one sided call would probably be easier to build and tune.

The biggest draw back to any wooden box call is they draw moisture.
even on the clear sunny days there is always a dew...which soaks into the wood.
I have had the best luck with oak...it just seems to draw less moisture.
but cedar, walnut, even poplar woods are good you just need to use a good water seal.

Let us know how it turns out!

Hey Lawdog..could you please tell me where you got the instructions for making box calls?  I have been wanting to give this a try myself and after several failed attempts figure I may want to get a real design.

Thanks..Shultzy

Go to http://www.customcalls.com/makeaturkeyboxcall.htm for a set of instructions on making box calls.  There may be other web sites but I haven't looked.  Maybe others here might know and post them.  Lawdog

have to agree with al62.  killing a bird over a call that you handcrafted definitely adds an element to the sport.  I have not made box calls, but do make slates and wingbones that seem to work pretty well, for me and others as well.

good hunting to you ,

frank

I have some of the calls Frank made and they wotk pretty good, Took some getting used to. The turkey call made out of a turkey wing bone works great, A friend of mine lives out in the country and has turkeys around his place all the time and i tried the wing bone out on them and got all kinds of results..............Joe...........

I made a turkey bone wing call this year. Kind of neat using the bones for a call...

Also learning how to make pot calls. This is my first, not very successful, attempt....

Justannie2

Looks like you knocked it out of the park with your wing bone, Its great looking, I've got one made by frank and it workes great, The picture of your pot call is kinda dark and these old eyes of mine don't do so well on dark pictures. If you could take another picture of it i would appreciate it very much. Your wing bone just looks great, Regards.....Joe.......

I gave up on the different calls and such. Just use my natural throat. Works great in rain or shine and I don't have to carry anything but my shot gun.

Well.... actually that pot sounds horrible  :)  It was the first one I made and I didn't know anything. This second one turned out sounding good enough that a custom call maker said he wanted it....

As for the wing bone, that was my first attempt at one. I'm not sure if the sound is right (unfortunately I'm tone deaf  :? )  But it's easily remedied if the sound isn't quite right on it once I get someone who knows the sound to test it out.
