.475 Linebaugh...How low can you go?
« on: February 18, 2003, 03:21:58 PM »
A quick question with a change of pace...With everyone wanting to know what the MAX load is for various cartridges, I'd like to know what the lighter/lightest loads y'all have used or worked up for a .475 Linebaugh or .480 Ruger.  How's the recoil with these loads?  Are any of them light enough to be comfortable for plinking?

8.0 grains WW231 with a 405 LBT for 850 fps.  Accurate and will kill anything in the lower 48.

15 gr. of HS-6 and a 400 wfn in the ...475 is a real nice load, 1050 fps, not as slow as the other guys mentioned but real nice to shoot and accurate.         Mike C

I appreciate the info.

I'm looking into the .475/.480 because I have less of an aversion to recoil than I do to muzzle blast.  Recoil itself doesn't seem to bother me but I don't like high velocity muzzle blasts.

I'm getting the impression that a .475/.480 would be better for me 'cause I could "push" a heavy bullet a little slower and cut down of some muzzle blast (as compared to say .454 Casull).  Am I correct in this assumption???

Thanks again for you help.

I have just tried 7.5 grains of Universal Clays and a 380gr bullet. I could see the bullets in the air. They still penitrated a steel water tank at about 80 yds. The barrel is leading up just in front of the forcing cone so the bullets I am using are a little to hard for that low of velocity.

I upped it to 8.5 grs and am still getting leading.

Woodchuk,

Loading a 400 grain or so bullet to velocities up to 1000 fps should give you an easy shooting load with little blast or recoil.  I know a 440 grain bullet from a .500 Linebaugh loaded to 750 fps will penetrate 31" of wet newsprint.  You should expect similar performance from a .475 Linebaugh.
