What do you all think of the .243 vs. 6.8SPC ?
Pros/Cons ?

I think the 6.8 SPC will not last very long. Remington has managed to stir up a little interest in it as a novelty item. But, the military hasn't really jumped on board, so I doubt it will ever really take off. Consider it a company-backed wildcat.

There was an article in the Sixgunner awhile back about the 6.8 SPC. JD Jones and Larry Rodgers field tested the 6.8. The results were less than ideal with several deer being lost after taking double lung hits. The deer that were recovered had very poor blood trail.

I think the 6.8 is the answer to a problem that doesn't exsist. I would choose the 30-30 AI or the 7-30 Waters for a contender or the 243 for the Encore over the 6.8.

Only thing is...where is the factory ammo? The 6.8 made it's entry last year...failed in competition, failed for hunting, failed to produce ammo, failed to become...'The New Military round'. It came and went...and was all a pipe dream. It is for hunting 'Mythological Game'....with a myhological gun with mythological ammo.
OK...here is a chalenge if you think I am wrong. Let's do a Poll on GBO. How many people have one in a factory chambering? NOT a rechambered Contender barrel. This thing has been around for more than a year now. Where are they? There was ONE rechamber floating around here in the classifieds that was new/unfired...because the guy couldn't get ammo.

Don't misunderstand me. I Would Love to have one. But if it is a myth...let's put it to bed right now. If not....as I said...I would love to have one. Tell me where to get the barrel and ammo...or brass. It is still 'unclear' what the brass is. It was originally stated that it was similar to the 30 Remington...which is nearly impossible to get since it has been obsolete for about 60 years.....and I hear rumors that it was a 'similar' rim...but not the same....so where do you get it?

Im the guy that was trying to find factory ammo. Ive yet to find and...some small ammo manufactures are making it...Raven Ammunition? i think is one...but remington and thompson center are going to (keeping my fingers crossed) come out with ammo soon. As far as the field testing that went on with JD Jone and Doc Rogers....the bullets they used were not very good game bullets( which they stated in the article). Now you have some bullets available that should work just fine. The 110 gr Barnes Triple shock....the 120 gr Shockwave(TC Factory ammo), Remingtons 115 gr bonded corlokt and heck..i bet the 130 Ballistic Tip would work.
And oh yeah..ive had my barrle for over a year..so ive been waiting. I know you can form cases...but thats not why i bought it. I think this cartridge will be every bit as good as the 7-30 Waters...maybe more so if the factory ammo situation gets squared away. A 115 gr bullet at 2600-2700 fps should be a great deer/antelope type round. My 2 cents...

I have a factroy barrel that arrived last week. I have dies but have yet to do any reloading and haven't found any factory ammo (but haven't spent any time lokking).

I had the opportunity to shoot a new 15" contender from foxridge. I "loaned" my uncle a blue frame 2 years ago and he has caught the "bug". I kept talking about ordering the 6.8 spc and he decided that he'd get one. I had the oppottunity to shoot it last week, but we were only fireforming loads. I did manage to secure some rem factory brass and also shot some reformed 30 rems. Nothing spectacular in accuracy, but hoping to get some good bullets (barnes) and see what happens.

My local gunshop surprised me Friday, the owner knows i am a contender addict and plunked down some 6.8 ammo on the counter, he had several boxes & says he can get more...i had never seen one until he showed me what these things look like, seems to be an interesting looking round, but the first thing i noticed was the 3 "crimp marks" around the primer pocket, i sorta wonder if all the factory loaded ammo they produce is going to have crimped primer pockets? that makes for a pain in the arse for handloaders in my opinion...

cant help but wonder if the bullet jackets thay are using in the factory loads are designed a little tougher to stand up to rifle velocities, and if so they perahps not opening up at pistol speeds? :?

I've been loading 6.8 for a friend of mine's AR. I am very impressed with it. Virtually every load I've tried with it shoots better than 1 moa and the ballistics are great for an AR sized round. I'll get either it or a 6 TCU barrel eventually (already have dies for the 6.

. I've been loading Remington brass for it and have about 6 bullet combinations for it.

However, when it comes to deer I'll be sticking to the 30-30 AI.

No offense Robert, but look what you just wrote here. Does it sound familar to a situation with a certain rimfire a couple of years ago? Only then you could get guns and no ammo, or very little. I do believe the professionals call it marketing.
