Author Topic: HELP! QUICK! Dissasembly Problem. (Read 565 times)

I just got my first 1911 and love it but I am haveing a serious problem. I took the mainspring assambly off and noticed that the sear spring was at an angle and it eisily came out but now the safety wont pull out and so the grip safety wont either so I can't lift the hammer strut to properly re-insert the sear spring. I tried to reassembly the pistol but now the hammer won't cock, there aren't even any clicks.
Please help soon as it is realy bothering me. After I get this fixed I will post again on what I boutght and my shooting expirience.

P.S. if it makes any difference it is a Springfield stainless GI full size.

catblaster: It sounds like that sear spring may be caught up somewhere. Remove the slide. Remove the mainspring housing, then cock the hammer back, remove the slide safety (you may have to wiggle that a bit) then remove the grip safety, then the hammer. Your mainspring should just about fall out if it hasn't already. Now, remove the sear, sear spring and plunger.

Set the sear spring aside. Reassmeble the sear and plunger without the spring. Reinstall the hammer, then the grip safety, then the slide safety. Make certain the hammer is down on the firing pin and reinstall the mainspring housing (use a punch or nail to hold the housing in place until you see that the hammer and sear mechanism are working properly). That should complete your necessary frame reassmebly. Note that you have left the sear spring out. I removed the one from my Colt Gold Cup and she shot better than ever. Hope this works for you. Before stripping down my 1911 I bought the Wilson Combat video on disassembly and reassembly and it was worth its weight in gold. Very clear. Very simple. Very helpful. Much easier to understand than books on the topic.

Catblaster.375, I've read, reread and reread again and am still not sure of what you're trying to describe. You said you tried to reassemble the pistol, did you or how close did you get to getting it back together? Is the mainspring installed now? If you have it partially assembled, take it apart again. I'm assuming you didn't take out the sear or disconnector or did you? If you didn't take out the sear and disconnector before, leave it alone for now. Please repost describing the condition the pistol is in currently.

Sorry guys I fixed my own problem. All I had to do was wiggle the safety up and down and pull real hard. I guess it was just stuck in there real tight. I was just very worried because I like this great gun so much. But other than that it is probably the eiasiest gun ever to dis/re assemble. The 1911 is actually realy simple. John Browning sure knew what he was doing. Thankyou for your replies, Sorry.
