judge this bear
« on: May 20, 2005, 08:39:47 AM »

the info i have is my bait stump is 42" tall and 22" wide.  the chain incidently is holding the front on that stump.

i think hes a good 3-4 year old.  hes got the beginning of a forehead crease.  his track is 5.75" across.  and he must be a model cuz he poses so good.

im certain he makes the 42" from snout to butt requirement...but anything beyond a small medium bear i dont know.

give me your opinion if ya got 1....thanks.

If you look at his ears, they look big to me, which make me think it is a medium size bear.  Just taking a guess.  :D

yeah i was kind of under the impression that he is about a 225# (spring weight) by that  which is hopelessly average here.  good bears here are 350.  big bears top 400 here.  i was figuring hes a better than small cuz of the distance between the ears...but yeah they are kinda like satellite dishes.  we'll see how fat he can get by fall...lol....unless i start gettin some bigger boars pretty soon.  i expect to see some bigger boars mid june or so when breedin kicks in.

Not over 250 lbs., most likely closer to 200 by the size and shape of the ears to the head.  Lawdog

so i think most of us are in agreement here.....we'll call him 217 pounds...lol.

the other picture in the other thread i just started is a tougher judge....but hopefully we can check it now that we have a handle on the stump size...other thread has the same stump in the picture.

Appears to be a younger bear.  He doesn't exhibit the excessively large face and shoulder width that you tend to see on older, more mature bears.  Guessing his weight is really tricky, but I would estimate 150 to 200 lbs..

dogrunner...the only thing i would add to what you say to give him a hair mir weight than what you say is the forehead crease beginning.  if you look close he is beginning to get a muscle crease in the forehead indicative of a 3.5 year old.  the crease will deepen alot by the time he hits 5 or better.  just my opinion.

Your probably right wijim, but I can't really tell too much from the photo.  Even enlarged, the clarity isn't good enough on the screen of my laptop to tell that much detail.  Nice looking bear though!

yeah its tough to see it on computer screen....i have a photo developing lab and the ones i printed off it i adjusted the density to see the detail better.  guess i didnt realize the clarity was poor on the screen. :-D

"Bear" in mind that your photography skills are great, it's usually the quality that get's lost by the time that it makes it through the web to my computer screen.

no skill required with taking the photos...lol.  but when i get em on disk they are unalter as far as density and color correction etc.....i jazz up the actual pictures to see detail.  the camera is a cheap motion sensor game cam.  cheapest you can get...lol

just a tidbit of info though on photo developing.....if you got good pictures that are over or under exposed or just lack vibrancy....ask your photolab to "color correct" it to bring out colors you like or alter the density for clarity or brightness.  we do it all the time at my store yet most dont unless you ask them too.  if they say they cant unwilling.  some may do it for a fee...but a good picture is often worth it.
