I have just bought a new 257 and would like some help with breakin and loads.

Bill,

Ask your question to 10 different people and you will get 10 different answers.

I tend to take it to the extreme. I clean the rifle after each shot for the first 10 shots. Then I clean the rifle every 2 shots for the next 10 shots. Then I always clean the rifle every 3 shots thereafter.

I have seen people shoot 20 to 30 rounds and then clean it in the end. I wouldn't do it.

I have to agree, with a new barrel, I don't think there is any such thing as cleaning too much. It may not make a difference, but I would definitely clean after every shot for the first 10-20 rounds. It can't hurt!

If your a target shooter a systematic break in might be warrented. However, I've been shooting guns for years and never heard of breaking in a barrel until about ten years ago. Most of my rifles were sighted in using about two (40 rounds) boxes of ammo. They shot great then and they still shoot great. To much preparation can take all the fun out of shooting. In my opinion we lean to much toward the Bench Shooters way of doing things. If hunters really needed to break in their rifle barrels, don't you thing the manufacturers would include the information in their booklets? NOW WATCH ALL THE PAPER SHOOTERS JUMP ALL OVER ME.
