There's an alternative reason for the 1:9.45" twist rate....whomever replied to my query could have been misinformed.....wouldn't be the first time we got misinfo from H&R, unfortunately. :(

Wish that weren't so, but you are correct on that.

7.62x39 barrels

I still think 7.62 or .303 British would be a great conversion.  Should work well within SAMMI specs.  The only problem I can see is where to get the rimmed extractor/ejector parts.

Tom, there are some pretty creative guys on this forum and they will probably have a way to go on this! :-)

I too like the idea of .303 Brit and 7.62X54R.  For the Russkie, the 45-70 extractor should be close.  Maybe the 30-30 or .44 mag would work with mods??  Dunno, but where there's a will there's a way and that sure does apply to HandiHolics :)

Last Tuesday I sent my action in for a 7.62x39 barrel and a 12 gauge barrel fitted.  This week, I called to confirm they got it enquired on a timeframe for getting it back was advised I should have it back in a week or so.

P.S. this barrel is one of the discounted ones in the Barrel Accessory Flyer...   I don't recall the exact total, but, I'm getting the 2 barrels & a new synthetic stock and shipping for about $160.

I came home from work on thursday and there it was!  7.62x39 and 12 ga fitted up perfectly.  I'm hoping to get it scoped and to the range next week!  After accuracy testing I will probably pirate the front sight from a T/C Contender (or my .223 lightweight barrel) and put a Williams peep on the rear for a more durable woods gun set up than a scope.

P.S. handwritten note on the reciept says it extracts, doesn't eject.

price for the work listed above and a new synthetic stock including shipping with the barrel accessory flyer was $157

Got mine yesterday, dirty of course, polished the bore and chamber with Remington bore cleaner, locks up tight but way to much side play with rifle broke open.
Shot it 30 times with cheap surplus, 10 would not fire, suspect thick primers are at fault, 2 other barrels shoot fine,.223/30-06, off this rereceiver. Last 2 3 shot groups were cloverleafs at 25yd sight in range.
Good luck with yours.

Barrels

I have 4 rifle barrels, a .45-70 that is .4567-8 or so, a .35 Whelen that is .3565, a .44 mag. that is .431, H&R said that is the target dimension, and a .308 that is .310, H&R said that is within spec.'s  as all of their dimensions are +- .002.
So I have a big .44mag., always thought it was .429, a .45-70 and a .35 Whelen that are slightly undersize and a .308 Win. that is at the extreme of the tolerance range, I suppose 3 out of 4 is not really bad, but I wish they had tighter tolerances.
At least they are American made.

I don't see how they can consdier that acceptable

A .310 308 is rediculous.  We had a 308 and dumped it because it wouldn't shoot.  Wonder if it was a .310?   The only barrels I slug are those that will be shooting cast bullets so we never slugged it out.

I have one that is .432.  I called H&R and was told the same thing -+ .002 is within their tolerances.

Just got back from the range and tried some 385 grain cast that worked good in a 45-70 that I no longer own.  It was a tight bore but my current gun is right on .457.  Bullet drops at about .455.  not good!  best it would do at 100 yds was about 7 inch

Anybody have an undersize 45-70 and need a mold?

Goes to show you why some shooters have problems getting their nef 44 handi to shoot!

I could accept this at +-.0002.  Thats why I decided to hold off buying any more barrels until I see the results of Mrs. lynch's survey.  If tolerances aren't held tighter and QC improved, I'll be buying another brand.  If the company wants my business then quality will improve.  I do very much like the Handi-rifle  but, they aren't the only supplier of inexpensive rifles.

I have the same groove diameter size, .432, but last I checked .432 - .429 = .003 That makes a .432 barrel oversize even by the loose standards NEF uses. Perhaps NEF uses that "New Math" crap they are teaching in the schools these daysthat produces geniuses that can't even read a tape measure. An air guage must completely blow their little minds.
