Colt GoldCup Series 70 question

Hi All,
    I have a Colt GoldCup Series 70. I let a friend handle it and they pulled out the slide stop without releasing the recoil spring. The slide is jammed forward and I can't seem to get it to slide backwards. I put my weight against the barrel while the muzzle was against a carpeted floor and it will not slide rearwards. Please help me with what I need to do? Thank you.

If the idjit pulled the slide stop there is nothing to prevent the slide from being removed from the pistol.  You may need to use the bushing wrench, or a bushing wrench, to remove the bushing to get the recoil spring to free up and then you should be able to completely remove the slide and reassemble the pistol properly.  It sounds like the recoil spring may be kinked, the recoil spring guide canted a bit sideways or the barrel link may be caught up somehow.  If you can get the bushing off and the recoil spring out you should be able to reassemble the piece.

Once reassembled, do not let your friend handle the pistol again.  Hope this works.  Mikey.

Hi All,
  I have removed the barrel cap but cannot get the spring to dislodge. The guide rod is holding the spring back. I used a rubber hammer to gently strike the barrel to see if it would move. It won't move. The spring and the guide rod do compress and seem to move freely, neither will move past the bottom strap of the slide. Any further suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Hi All,
    I finally gently pulled the slide forward and it came off the frame. Thanks Mikey, you were right, the spring had kinked and was holding the slide. I again appreciate your help.

TJ1:  It used to be that some old Army drill Sargeants would love to take your 45, and as they cocked the slide back to , ummm, inspect the piece, they would purposely pop the slide stop so that when they let the slide go forward the piece would come apart and they would say - 'ooops' Trainee, you screwed up, now gimme 25 (pushups that is).  I saw that little trick not work once and later found the spring to be kinked up inside.  That was one embarrassed DI.  

Glad you got it back together.  Don't let your buddy get his hands on it again (lol).  Mikey.

Hi Mikey,
  I'm still laughing about your DI posting! I ordered an 18lb recoil spring when I found this one had kinked. When I called Wilson Combat and relayed my story, the rep. said he had never heard of a recoil spring kinking. I felt quite foolish. No more! The story arose because I was asking whether or not to install a guide rod. The jury is still out on that. Any opinions would be appreciated. Many thanks Mikey.

TJ1:  I forget just who wrote the article but one I read within the past year did not advocate for guide rods.  The findings were that guide rods did not help accuracy or reliability.  An 18 lb recoil spring will surely help control the recoil on that GC, and you can go heavier with spring kits from Wolffe if you want.  I would say to forget the guide rod and enjoy shooting your GC.  HTH.  Mikey.
