30 Carbine Blackhawk
« on: June 04, 2005, 02:49:17 AM »
I just tried to fit a 32 H&R round in my 30 Carbine cylinder and voila! They fit like a glove and the cylinder rotates fine with all six chambers full. Has anyone tried this? I wanted a 32 H&R Single Six with adjustable sights in the worst way but could never find one locally. I have an SP-101 but wanted a single action with a longer barrel. I am assuming that this will be like firing a 38 in a 357 magnum and I'm hoping it works with good accuracy. I've owned both guns for years and never thought of trying this. Wow, a new gun without spending a dime.......whooohoooooo!!

I tell ya what fellows, don't know if it'll cause any trouble but both the 32 mag and the 32-20 are .312 dia and the carbine is .308. the carbine will take about 55,000 pounds. but swedging those bullets down to 308 may make them shoot poorly  good luck

Doesn't the 30 carbine cylinder have a step where the carbine case mouth contacts to determine headspace? Seems to me that upon firing the 32 H & R its bullet would scrape on that step and possibly deform. Probably foul the cylinder too. Since I have never owned a 30 carb. Blackhawk I'm only speculating here.

However it does sound interesting.

The 32-20 will be trimmed to meet the small step if you want to call it that. Most revlovers have that chamber mouth to compensate for the case wall thickness. After trimming the cases on the 32-20, there won't be any jump between the case and the chamber mouth. And regarding the .312 bullets, that's a simple fix. I won't use them. :)

There are two potential problems using the .32-20 in the .30M1 chamber.  One, headspace may not be correct if you headspace off the rim.  If you headspace off the case mouth you might be all right, with the caveat that the .32-20 brass is very weak compared to .30M1 brass.

This leads to the other problem.  None of my revolver chambers have a deep, sharp step at the case mouth like the .30M1 chamber has.  This means that the .32-20 bullet will likely be shaved as it passes over this step.  Even cutting the case to headspace on the step will not solve this - the .32-20 case is very very thin, and the .30M1 case is very thick, so the .32-20 case may lie at the bottom of the chamber and not be centered in the chamber.  This would point the bullet at the bottom edge of the step, with bullet damage a possibility.

OTOH this may work very well. I don't want to discourage you, just keep you appraised of the potentials for trouble.   Make initial tests with low pressure loads and have fun.

Ok, here are the stats on both the 32-20 case and the 30 Carbine case FYI. The 32-20 case is .326 at the mouth where the 30 Carbine is .336 at the mouth. The is a difference of .010 with it being .005 on each side. This is the thickness of a human hair. My chamber throats measure .306 on my 30 Carbine and on my 32 Mag SP-101, they are 307. There is already a difference of .002 on the Blackhawk and .005 on the SP-101 but, both shoot fine for me with reloads. I have shot a few dozzen rounds with resized 32-20 cases in my 30 Carbine Blackhawk and actually prefer them over the Carbine case. I'm not looking to split hairs with a single action so this recipe works great for me. I favor rimmed cases that launch the 30 caliber so those with a Buckeye for sale get your crying towles out. The 32-20 case in the 30 Carbine Blackhawk is a great idea and one worth looking into for all who own one.

It's your gun, have a blast. Personally I would not do it. JMHO.
