Normally it stands for Minute of Angle, or just slightly over 1" at 100 yards, 2" at 200 yards, 3" at 300 yards, etc. It is also the name of an extremely accurate pistol made by Richard Mertz of Eaton, Ohio. Russ

Also on the Mil Dot scope it is 3.414 MOA between each dot on the cross hair at 100 yards. This is what I read anyway. Just something I learned after buying a new Mil Dot scope.
Which means, it is about 3.5 " between the dots at 100 yards.  I sure hope that is what I'm understanding cause I'm getting ready to site my new scope in and then start using the dots to reach out and touch some P Dogs.

There are 360 degrees in a circle.  There are 60 minutes in a degree.  One minute (in our shooting context) is the angular measurement at the firing line that contains all the strikes of the bullets on the target 100 yards away with a dispersion of 1.045 inches.  If dispersion were a linear function, the group size would be 2.090" at 200 yards, 3. 135" at 300 yards, etc.  If your scope is calibrated in MOA, you can then determine how much to turn the dial to move the center of your group for each distance.

Thank you so much.  Hate it when you don't know the lingo/acronyms...especially with 24 years active duty....
