375 JDJ Question
« on: June 14, 2005, 10:35:05 AM »
I have an SSK .375 JDJ (12 in Stainless) barrel.  I shot it for the first time this weekend with factory ammo (200 grain softpoints).  It shot great.  With a 4X scope at 100 yards I was able to keep them right at an inch.  My problem is this is not the bullet I want to hunt moose with.  Any load recommedations?

I just ordered some nosler 260gr. accubonds. I will see how fast i can push them, Nosler says they expand good down to 1700 fps. Nice sleek bullet- like a ballistic tip. :D

Tad, I think you'll be impressed with the AB's. I've tried them in my 708 and 338#2 and are very happy with the way they perform on paper and testing media.

Heres a picture of a 235 speer hot core recovered from a boar shot at 12 yards. Dont know the velocity, but it was a pretty stiff load.

JD Jones always said to use the Hornady 220 gr flat nose for deer size game and the Hornady 270 spire pt for elk size critters. I haven't shot  ELK YET BUT i AM SURE THEY WOULD DO a great job and as far as the 220 gr. for deer you couldn't ask for a better bullet , they don't go very far!!!  the 270 gr would be just the bullet for moose , the penetration from what I have heard from JD is unbelieveable!!!!!  I have a 12 '' ssk bbl. and the recoil is pretty stiff with the 270's but very nice with the 220gr's

I just returned from Africa using the 375JDJ. I used 52.0 gr. AA2520 with a Sierra 250 gr. Game king. It worked great. No animal went more than 30 yards. All shots were complete pass throughs on animals upto Eland. The 220 Hornadys are great on deer and antelope size game.

Last year I shot 9 antilopes with the 270 Hornady.  I was not satisfied with the bullet.  3 times I found a lot fragiles from the bullet  - and the biggest part of the bullet was 25% of it`s weight.
This year I used Nosler Partition/260 gr. - and this bullet will be my hunting bullet for big game like Blue Wildebeest and up to Eland.
