Cases won't hold bullet
« on: July 01, 2005, 03:38:35 AM »
Is this the international sign for these cases are through? Alright i size the neck like always and thats all i'm supposed to size, but when i insert the bullet (Lee CLassic Loader) the bullet offers no resistance whatsoever when seating and i can easily move and remove the bullet with my hand. New cases-2nd/3rd time loading are fine and work well. Are these cases just through??

Lostsniper,

Those loose bullets may not be your or the cases' fault.

The Lee Classic Loader only neck sizes, and uses no expander operation.  The neck is sized to a compromise dimension that should fit all standard bullets.  It is an unheatreated die body, and with extensive use, the neck sizing portion wears away.  It no longer sizes the neck as small as it used to.  That is probably your source of the loose bullets.

I'd suggest an occaisional full-length resizing using a regular press and dies.  You should still be able to get lots of loadings out of those cases.

What caliber are you loading for?

Naw, Lost. You got two options. You can send that sizer back to Lee with a note explaining your troubles and they will send you a tighter one. Otherwise, you can buy a batch of military pulldown brass from www.gibrass.com . Milsurp brass is a bit heavier and thicker.

Be sure you buy the never fired pulldown because anything that has been fired in a bigger chamber won't work with the Lee. You should get 5-6 shots a case with Lee's suggested loads. Hotter loads will cause the case to need resizing much sooner.

For most of us the Lee Classic was a stopgap measure. It got us started, gave us a safe way to learn the basics of reloading, and supplied us with ammo while we were scraping together enough to buy a press, etc. It can do that for you, too. Stay with reloading and you will eventually get all the bells and whistles, but with a tighter die or thicker brass, it can tide you over a year or two.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

A Lee RGB dies set is less than $10.....

RGB die set

A Hand press kit can be had for $26

Lee Hand Press

Or for $31, the Lee Challenger kit...

Lee Challenger Press kit

You'll also need a shell holder for the die set and eventually, a case trimmer.

if he stays away from the RGB die set he will get a shell holder and powder dipper.

Then he can get the lee case trimmer for $4.00 and the stud and holder for a nother $3.00.

LS308, The Pacesetter die set ($19) is the RGB die set plus a factory crimp die and a shell holder plus another dipper which you already have. If you aren't interested in the factory crimp die, just order the RGB and I'll send ya a #2 shell holder, I have at least one extra.

Pacesetter Die set

The Lee case trimmer which consists of a length guage and shell holder is $3.29.

The Cutter and lock stud is $2.99.

BTW, the shell holder for the trimmer is not the same as the shell holder for the die set/press.

Let me know whatcha decide...

Lost,
A hundred bucks for a reloading kit is cheap comparied to buying factory ammo. Once you get away from banging on a Classic Reloader, you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner. Actually, if I were in your position, I'd go for the Lee Classic press and a set of dies. This along with a good scale and manual will serve you for a lifetime. If you continue to reload, you'll upgrade sooner or later, why not sooner?
Cheers,

Are you quite certain that your sizing die in screwed down enough to size your neck?  A lot of times we can have the die bottom contact the shell holder and still not resize the case if the die isn't set properly from the top.
Check it out.  Best wishes.

summer job maybe

lostsniper308, i see from your bio that your 16 which would indicate that you don't have a full time job.  If I can make a suggestion, how about a summer job to get the reloading stuff you want.  I pay my 17 year old brother-in-law 25 bucks a week to cut my grass.  If you could find a couple of relatives that would let you use their lawmowers you could have the money for a Lee loading kit very shortly.
