Which rifle to use?
« on: March 09, 2005, 04:25:15 AM »
I just wondering, I am going hog hunting at blackmountainexotics in Oklahoma this weekend.  I was going to take my 300 SAUM, but then I have a model 7  .243 that I have not killed anything with other than targets.  Have you guys ever taken a hog with a .243? I just can't  decide. Thanks for your replys.  I was also going to ask if anyone here had hunted there before?(blackmountainexotics.com)

The 243 will work well, just use a quality bullet and you should be just fine.  :D

Thanks, I was wondering.  All of my hunting experience is mostly 2-3 whitetails a year and a mixture of varmits that show up at the wrong time.
I am very excited to try my luck with hogs.  I will post monday when I get back.

Take both; I use my 300 Wby. mag. on the longer shots and 45 70 and 444 marlin for the close shots. If you're going after the 400 pds. and up,carry the 300 mag.  I've been trying to nail one here in S.E. Okla. for the past month that will go well over 500 pds. If you've got the 243 in your hands and you get a shot at a big one, shoot for the neck because thats about the only safe way to drop him in his tracks. If you shoot one and he runs off into a thicket( he probably will) don't go in alone, get someone you trust to not run to go in with you. Digger

I've been successful with my .270 loaded with Federal 130 grain at 165 yds in S.Carolina and my T/C White Mtn carbine loaded with 90 gr of Pyrodex pushing a Hornady 240gr 44 cal copper jacketed hollow point in a 50 cal sabot. Both were one shot kills and they dropped were they stood. The one shot with the White Mtn was 239# dressed and has 4.5 inch tusks.

My friends wife shot her Russian Boar with a Rem. Mod 7 in .243 with factory Federals with 100gr. SP's, the boar ran 40 yards before it tipped over.  I prefer muzzleloaders, took 2 Russians with my T/C .58 Big Boar.

I decided to take the 300 saum.  It worked excellent.  I can not quit thinking about it.  That was the most fun I have had in awhile.  Those hogs can be pretty smart.

I see people saying they would use big bullets using a .243 , etc. Ive shot countless pigs rangin from 20-300 lbs. In Texas using remington 100gr factory cheap ammo , him em behind the ear and ive never had a single one run an inch. Also , I just recently used a 22-250 using BT handloads and put down 2 100lb hogs. Again just hit em right behind the ear and it will do the trick.

I just use a 3" Gerber folder! Dogs drag em down,,flip em over, cut their throat! Don't have to worry about killin the dogs!  But that's Florida style!
