What can we do about the hammer spur?
« on: June 18, 2005, 04:04:24 PM »
Ok, surely this has been discussed before, but why is the hammer spur on the Handi so high?  It forces you to use high rings, which places the scope ridiculously high on the barrel.  I've seriously considered Dremeling mine down a bit and reshaping it, but I'm worried decreasing the hammer's mass may lead to misfires.

So, has anyone gotten drastic with their Handi hammer?

I agree that the hammer spur is bad and something should be done about it. I can't believe that NEF can't make a more 'ergonomic' shape that functions as well or better. Just think of the after-market sales of such a hammer.

I ground one down, crossdrilled it and soldered in a bit of drill rod for an offset spur. You need the offset with the low mount, anyway. Drill rod made up most of the mass I removed, although I am not sure it's all that critical.

I have several of the old H&R rifles with the low profile hammer. They are fine as long as you do not need  a hammer spur. If you attempt to put one of the current hammer spurs on the old profile, it is not possible to bring the hammer to full cock. The spur hits the opening lever. That has been my findings. So the cross drill and insert rod is the only option I can see. Other ideas?
