Fall in NY
« on: May 10, 2005, 10:22:37 AM »
I return each year to where I was raised to deer hunt . I have read the proposed changes, and I guess I understand the youth thing, but what about us seniors?... My main problem is trying to figure out if the proposed early season muzzleloader season is still on, maybe I'm brain dead, but I can't seem to find clear direction from the proposed changes.. Help

that wouldnt make any sense... there is no shortage of deer in this state,
in fact.. we have an extreem over abundance of deer to the point that
there are muliple extra tags issued to each liscence to take more deer,  perhaps last seasons take was off because of the crappy weather..it rained most of the first half of the season...

Forget about an early muzzleloader season in the southern zone whether with an inline or primitive weapon. I was reading the New York Outdoors paper this morning. Seems like the bowhunters had enough clout to put any season that would interfere with theirs to rest. From what I've read the only possibility for an extended season would be the 9 days after the regular season for both Muzzleloader and bow. This gives the muzzleloaders 2 extra days and bowhunters an extra 4 days to hunt. From what I can gather there's a lot of pissin and moaning by the bowhunters. They get a few extra days but its cold, snowy and the deer are still spooked from shotgun season.  BOO-HOO!!

I didn't want that muzzleloader season smack dab in the middle of archery season either.  I didn't complain about the contemplated move like some bowhunting organizations in the state but I was not in favor of it.  I enjoy the muzzleloader season where it is now...After gun season...I enjoy hunting with a smokepole when it is 15 degrees out and snowy.  There is something about the crisp, clear woods that makes me fond of hunting the late season with a ml.

I agree i would like to see it all stay the same. Except forget all the blasted DMPs there are not enough deer in these woods here. We hunt rain or shine weather dose not determine our season, if its open we are out. we seen more deer in a day hunting the northern zone than we did the catskills. I want my boy in a few years to go out and see deer. He is ready now at age 8. But put them in the woods and see 1 maby 2 deer a day and it can get flustrating for a kid.
keep you point restrictions too. if it has horns its going home and in the freezer. dont get me wrong everyone likes big antlers but most like backstraps. Tell my boy, son i know its your first year but you cant harvest that fat little buck because he dont have enough antler. Hog wash take your antler restrictions to texas and leave us meat hunters alone. Tell most of the old boys from the 50's & 60's to shoot does for meat and see what they would sayand think 70's - 90's how many deer did you see? You can thank them for all the success we had in thoes years.
