:shock: I have never seen a Gun Crew where the loader and firer stands behind the breech area---he didn't get the round into the breech as he had to push it again---I just wonder if that piece did not have a malfunction---it appeared to fire as the breech closed---no doubt this guy ( if he lived ) was hurt fairly seriously. We had an incident at Fort Bliss where they were firing the 90mm M2 AA gun from the wheels ( anti-tank ) and one of the gun crew stood behind the breech as the gun was fired---he was crushed by the recoiling barrel as it caught him between the breech and one of the legs which were in travelling position. That weren't pretty.

I agree with you, if folks would pay attention to training and what they are SUPPOSED to do, these accidents would never happen. As Mark Twain said, "common sense isn't as common as it's cracked up to be."

I had 6 wonderful months at the Comanchee County Cannon Cocker College in 1972. We were ALWAYS warned (155 SP) that the breech recoiled from 36 to 42" and DON'T get behind it!
