~Savage or CZ~????
« on: April 26, 2005, 06:33:51 PM »
I am going to buy me a new varmint rifle but i can not make up my mind.  I am looking at 2 guns. One is a Savage 22-250 with 1-12 twist barrel varmint rifle.  The other is the CZ-USA 527 Varmint Rifle in 204 Ruger.  What gun would most likely be the better pick for groundhog hunting and what gun is most of the time more accurate.

I have fondled several CZ 527 rifles.  I am not sure if it is the
stiff, rough feeling bolt, or the set trigger, but something
about them, has kept me from purchasing one.  I do have
two Savage centerfires, and both are very accurate.  One is
a .22-250 Rem, in the Model 16(stainless/synthetic sporter),
and I put 50 gr. Vmax bullets into .3 MOA groups.  I am not sure
I could handle any more accuracy than that :)

I will buy more Savage rifles, and I will fondle more CZ rifles.
Maybe someday a CZ will follow me home, as of now, several
brands have been beating it out at purchase time.  Tikka has
been my first choice, lately.  I am eyeing up a Savage, with
a Stevens label, as a .20 Tactical project gun, but if Tikka
ever gets a .204 Ruger chambering on the market, I might
have to go that way, for a .20 cal. rifle.

I would not be afraid to purchase a CZ, a Howa, a Savage,
or a Tikka rifle, if I got a drop dead great deal on one.

I have a .204 ruger.  I shoot groung squirrels at 250 yds.  .  If you want to see varments at the moment of impact go with the .204  If you want your spotter to see the impact go with the 22-250.

I prefer the .204. For a walk around gun the CZ looks great. For sitting and snipping I would go with the Savage in .204. I have both round and like the .204 the best. It uses less powder, don`t make as much noise and shoot alittle flatter, but when push comes to shove there isn`t that much difference, unless your hide hunting then it`s the .204 hands down.

Both are great shooters. I have a CZ 527 Varmint in 223. With the HS Precision stock and set trigger, it has the features for accuracy and quality shooting. The weight is good for a heavy barrel. This is my carry rifle. It shoots lights out. White box goes to 1/2" as does Georgia Arms. I reload and find 3/8" normal. I can adjust the trigger to 6oz. with no creep or overtravel for the bench and 2lb for the hunt...

I also have a CZ 550 Varmint 22/250 with the HS Precision and set trigger. The accuracy is on a par with the 527 as are the features. However it is much heavier. Good shooting. JV.

and what gun is most of the time more accurate.

This makes the choice easy.  Go with the Savage.  About the most accurate out of the box, factory rifle being made today.  Lawdog
