500 Smith and Wesson report
« on: June 23, 2005, 08:39:25 PM »
Got my 500 Smith and Wesson this morning and took it out and
shot 167 rounds of 335 grain cast bullets. I tried about 5 different
powders to see how they compared to my Smith 500 revolvers. The
slower powders burn a little cleaner in the rifle barrel. Its a fun gun to
shoot I killed a lot of rocks with it today and some targets. The
accuracy was very good at the short range that I was shooting. I will
have to scope it to shoot at longer ranges as my eye sight is not
what it used to be. Recoil is fairly stout at top end loads with H110
and little gun powder, but not to bad with the limbsaver slip on pad.
From what I see so far it's a winner and I look forward to a lot more
shooting and load development with it.....

PS. I just love my 500's

Gonna be picking a pair of them up tommorrow. Been waiting
patiently since I found out that they arrived last week.
Could have gotten them this evening, but I brought the
Harley to work and dont have room for them.

Welcome ROD;

Glad to have you onboard. Keep up the range reports on the 500.
I went to the range today and shot my 44mag. barrel.
Thought I had a new load using a Rem. 180gr. JHP and H-110, but I was wrong. Still using the Speer 300gr. JSP. I did have a group that had 4 holes touching and one just a hair high. Put it at just under 1-1/2" at 100yds.
Good Luck on your 500. Sounds like a winner for ya.

Thank you for the "Welcome aboard"
I got my first 8 3/8 S&W revolver on 7-11-2003, since then I feel in
love with the cartridge and the guns that shoot it. I then added a 10 1/2
inch S&W performance center 500 S&W, then a 4 inch S&W 500, and I
just had to round the collection out with the 6 1/2 inch performance center
500 S&W revolver, these things are addicting and I have had to sell several other guns to get my 500's but the 500's are so much fun to shoot I don't miss the other guns at all because I shoot my 500's allot. I have shot
over ten thousand rounds through my guns so far in the last 2 years and
love every minute of it. I purchased my NEF 500 rifle as a whole gun and
NOT a barrel, the rifles are just now hitting the market so its real hard to get one right now but as time goes by they will get easyier to get. I feel that I might be gaining aproxametly 200 fps over my revolvers but I have not shot the loads through a cronograph so it might just be wishful thinking on my part ,but whatever the speed the bullets hit hard and kill rocks real good....Thanks again....Rod

RODinOregon,

Could you please tell me what the rate of twist is for the .500 S&W. Also if you have a set of calipers, what the land to land and groove to groove measurements are. I have a project in mind and need to know these three things before I can proceed. Thank you for any information and if anyone else knows these three things please chime in.
