Need Karma, testing loads tomorrow
« on: June 22, 2005, 08:02:31 PM »
Ok guys and gals, I need some good Karma tomorrow.

I loaded a few test rounds for my Buffalo Classic with black powder.

I am a relative newbie to re-loading in general and these are my first black powder loads.

Manuals and research be darned, I'm shooting these things tomorrow.

Cross your fingers and rub your rabbits feets as I am touching these things off between 1:00 and 8:00 Central Time.(PM)

I'll have a trusted member of the club there with cell-phone in hand if something goes awry.

If the loads go boom and a 500 grain boolit exits the barrel, I'll deem the experiment a success.

Ten Fingered and reasonably normal looking...

PS, these loads were done with a combination of a Lyman 310 tool and RCBS equipment.

Just remember the one true never to be forgotten rule when loading with the Holy Black, NO AIR SPACE! if there is air space between the bullet and the powder you will have real issues....

If you have questions about reloading black powder into the BC let me know, I have been playing with that since I got mine too.

Projectile in question is a 500 grain roundnose from Montana Precision Swaging. It's lubed with SPG and seated over a fiber card wad.

Greg, thanks for the reminder about air space. The load is compressed with no air space between boolit, wad and powder.

Just a few more hours until the range opens...

Well, they all went BOOM and a big boolit came out the end of the barrel.

I guess I did something right.

I think I might get hooked on this blackpowder silliness. :)

Now I need to cook up some more of these things and do some accuracy work.

Oh yeah, I've still got all my fingers and still look as bad as I did when I started.

Funny thing, just a few minutes before I touched off these rounds the Flight for Life chopper went over. I thought if I need them I'll be in big trouble

Groups? Heck, I'm just glad they all went boom.

I was just lobbing these things at the backer boards set up at about 75 yards. BOOM! THWACK. BOOM! THWACK.

That's it.

Next time will be a bit more serious. Hard to be serious when you giggle like fool everytime you pull the trigger.

Ok gang, loaded up some more blackpowder rounds and headed back to the range today.

Took a few shots at 100 yards and went to inspect the target. Nothing, not even on the paper. Went back to the bench and did a bit of adjusting.

Fired two more rounds.

Back to the target.

Well I'll be darned if there weren't two holes just over one inch apart.

Back to the bench. Sweatin' like a hog, hot humid no wind. More adjustments.

Fired a three shot group at just under three inches.

Boy was I

Two other club members showed up and wanted to shoot at 200 yards. No problem. My shoulder was ready for a break. This is not a bech gun.

Let one of these guys give the Buff Classic a whirl off-hand at 200 and he centered the tire laying on the berm two shots running.

My turn, not quite as good ( one in 2 just out) but I was darn pleased.

I am a real happy puppy as Hellacatcher would say.

Hey, that's great shooting!!! Now all ya need is a spotting scope or a pair of binos so you don't spend all day running back and forth lookin at your targets and can spend more time shootin!!!! :-D
