Varmiter the only thing I can think of that no one has mentioned is the temp. differance. If it was cold when it shot best,with the warmer weather it may have increased pressures,velocity and harmonics in the barrel. Lots of ammo if left laying in the sun (on the dash of my truck) will shoot a lot hotter than normal.You may need a different load for summer shooting. Digger

Or use a powder like Hodgdon's extreme powders that are said to not be temperature sensitive......

Digger i thought of that. But when i went in the fall the weather wasn't cold at all IMO. It was probably around 50 degrees. And when i went to the range 2 weekends ago it was about 7:30 AM EST and was only about 65 degrees. The ammo came directly out of the air conditioned truck to the shooting bench. The barrel was clean so i shot 2 fouler shots. Then it was out to 100 yards. As best i can remember the first shot hit about 4" high to the right. The second shot was 2" low and to the left from the inch circle placed in the center of the target. The third was was about 3" high and to the left. I should've saved the target but i was alittle pissed.

After i looked at the target i checked my rings. I thought they might be loose, but as i checked them they weren't. I was shooting from a bipod with the first 3 shots so i took it off and layed it on some bags right in front of the trigger guard. Same thing. :evil:

I don't know what it could be. The only thing i can figure is the scope or like digger said the ammo(maybe).

Major change!!!! Particularly how the forend of the synthetic stock fits!!!! Both to the barrel and how tight it makes the action.....Ya kinda forgot that little change, eh?

I'll switch back and see how it shoots next time i get to the range. But i didn't think it could cause that drastic of a change. Going from under 1" to the best being 4"

Drew, ya know how little changes in a Handi can make a big change in performance, well, the stock change is a big change. If all stocks were identical and all frames were identical, it probably wouldn't make as much difference, but that's not the case with Handis....unfortunately. :?

If changing the stock don't help theres only 1 thing left to do. Call a exorist (hope thats spelled right) These Handi are prone to being possesed by demons that like to drive the shooters nuts. I put my ear to a barrel once and heard something snickering at me. :-D :-D Digger

It could also be that when we remove the stock or do a trigger job, we release the magic smoke that H&R puts in em, sometimes it makes em better, other times they get worse, ya just never know!!! :-D :-D :-D

If you want to improve it but want it cheap, ream it to 222 rem magnum. That would clean the chamber up and give a bit of extra power to boot. I think you could do it yourself from the looks of it.

Brass is harder to find but what the heck?

I thought magic smoke was for electrical components, when you let the smoke out, they quit working. Happened to the power supply on my old computer.

And every time I let the magic smoke out of a cartridge, it quits working. No matter how many times I cock the hammer and pull the trigger, it won't fire again and I have to eject and reload.

Have a Handi in 223 bull and experienced the same problem. One time it would shoot, next time it wouldn't. What I found was that when shooting from a bench I had to be extra critical of where I placed the action and forearm. Also, full followthru with the trigger. I finally went back and cleaned up the forearm, glass bedded it and added the O ring. I have a Nikon 4.5-14 on mine and the best weight bullet I have found is a 52 grain hollowpoint boattail. This came out of rounds loaded by Wisconsin Cartridge company.... I would revisit the range, pay close attention to setup when shooting. If problem persists, change out the scope. Tasco has been known to make a few bad ones just like all the rest.

Yep, 30-30AI sees more of an increase in powder capacity than most chamberings, and the brass will last longer in the AI. Now that I've had the reamer and rifle for over a year, I've finally got firm plans to run a few rounds through the rifle, then rechamer it this weekend. Thinking about putting a scope base and 20x scope on it and shooting groups at 200 yards so I can tell if I mess up the accuracy when I do the rechamber without a lathe. (The gun should be far more accurate than the shooter with the factory open sights)
