i have just got a lee 500r mold. with a 22 to one mix i get a 508grn bullet,tried it at the range to day i sure am glad i got it my buff classic loves it .the load is 70grn fff goex .025 card over powder one ragged hole5 shots at 100 meters of x sticks.i tried at 200 meters 5 shots one and half inch. so you with buff classics try this mold $ 13.75 from track of the wolf,its not a lot to pay for a good mold bernie :D

thanks all i think i got  an extra good buff classic when i got this one,it shoots the pants of a pedersoli 45/70 sharps owned by one of the members at the club i am in. he quick you should try this mold it should do good in your 45/120. bernie :D

Funny, some nef shooters report great results with the 500r and some find it doing cartwheels at 100 yards!

Must be barrel size variation.

You have of course proven conclusively, once again, that nothing shoots like BP in a 45-70!!!

Bernie, I'm going the other way with the 45-120 BC, gas checks or jacketed and more power!!!! I shot some all lead bullets with 95grs of T7 and got some nasty leading. Goex is not easy to buy here if you don't belong to a club, no one sells it close by and I can buy smokeless for the same price as the T7 and use half as much for the same velocity. So that's the direction I'm heading. I'm gonna see what kind of velocties I can achieve with 405gr Cast Performance or Rem 405gr bullets and exceeding the 31kpsi recommended max loads from Accurate with XMP5744, should be fun... :-)

go fore it tim. longcruise i think its the way i load, the fff it seems to like a lot of compresion. might be different with a new can of black who can tell, but as they say make hay while the sun shines bernie :D  :)

I load with lots of compression too.  More than most seem to recomemend!  The originals were compressed a lot too.  Had to be to load 70 grains of powder.  I drill my flash holes with a #41 Drill (.096) and resize the body as little as possible then use a mag primer.

How do you do your prep and load?

hi all longcruise i just neck size ,i don't drill flash hole and use std primers.i put a little mark in my mold on the nose just to the right of the join and line this up in between the w w on the rim of the case,it works good for me.

I just picked up a universal decapper and am going to give a try with no resize at all.

I was just wondering how in the world you got 70gr FFFg and a .025 card wad in that case, and was still able to get a bullet to seat?
Was that weight, or volume?
Did you "drop tube", or vibrate the case?
What case was you using?

I don't doubt but what you did. And, I'm not trying to be a "smarty pants".
I just really want to know how you did it.

Even with a 30" drop tube, and a real slow pour, I can only get about 66 / 67gr. and I can't seat the 500R bullet w/o damage to the ogive.

I also don't have the Buff Classic either. I suspect it may have a longer throat that lets you seat the bullet farther out.

Did you chronograph the load?
If you can 1200fps (+/-) with that load, and you have the right sights, that should make a very fine 500mtr load.

hi russ i youse a 36inch drop tube and compress the powder a lot .if i try to empty the case after that the powder is solid,so it gives me just enough room fore the bullet .by the way the bullet is seated to just level with the bottom of the first driving band it works for me in this buff classic . might not work in an other ,as they say every gun is a law un to its self

by the way tim that load and the 500r  as you now the gun is sighted at 110 meters tried it at 200, max at my range lined up on at 2 foot rock of hand no change to sights ca'boom no more rock the 500r is very flat shooting.

Quick, let me know how it goes with 5744.  I too would like to work up some good loads with that powder.  Haven't had the range time yet to really work on anything.  I'm just looking for a nice accurate load in the lower lever rifle range with rem 405 gr softnose.  (although my friends say I should just go with the 300gr hp for deer)  My buddy has several loads for every gun he owns with different bullets and different powder.  I want one load that works well.  Then when I pick up the gun, I know exactally where it shoots, no question.   44 Man

44man, I've shot 39-43gr of 5744 in the 45-120, all loads shot great with both the 405gr CP and the 405 Rem. Here's the lever gun data for the 45-70 from Accurate...it's a .pdf file so save a copy once it's loaded.

Here is a BP loading system that I use for my hunting ammo.  This is not meant to create match grade ammo.  Heavy bullets propelled by BP will have practial applications in the field out to about 150 yards.  Two hundred yards if you know your rifle, your load and the range to the animal.  You can get 2.5 to 3 moa with this method without any further testing or ado.  You can also skip the full length resizing if your brass was fired in the same rifle ou are reloading for.

This not revolutionary and any accomplished BPCR shooter would not use this system for match shooting.  Here's the link:
