30/30 handi possibilities?
« on: July 14, 2005, 06:44:03 AM »
I'm considering getting a 30/30 bbl and wanted some info about loading for it? factory ammo is cheap, and with the handi action can't you load some pretty hot pointed stuff too? any info would be appreciated greatly.

beckerhead:

Use the search feature at the top of the page...I typed in 30-30 Handloads and got back 3741 hits on it...granted it's a-lot of threads and post to look thru...but you will be able to see what has been posted on it...and there is a wealth of information and load data in it...you'll find what is used for Elk and Bear..and Deer...and even varmint loads...and your not limited to just factory loads...even though some of them are great...One thing that is current in most 30-30's...is the accelorator  factory stuff isn't usually accurate...

Good Luck

If you really want pointy bullets going fast why not just get the .308 or .30-06 one? I've known a couple people who tried to get .30-30 to perform with a pointed bullet and never were satisfied.

having a handi rebarreled as we speak.  will finally end up as a 30-30Ai.
went this route because of the hype on the 30BR.

I already have a .308 Ultra, I just think that taking what is perceived by so many "magnumaniacs" these days to be a pea shooting, pitiful caliber, and dusting their tailfeathers with it is a very worthwhile venture. No, I don't expect Lazzeroni ballistics from a 30/30 handi, but if I can consistently shoot  less than 2" groups at 100yds. with a Marlin lever gun, Remmy green box 170's, and a $30.00 Simmons Paper Towel Roller 3X9, then heck yeah, a tuned up handi with spitzers and some nice glass will be the bid dawg.

.30/30 accuracy

2" groups is what I am getting consistently  right now with Winchester factory ammunition on a stock handi with a Simmons 3X9X32 in .30/30.
Handi's don't need loading up or modifying, they just need to be shot.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

A 2" group will kill deer everyday and twice on sunday, but impressive at the range? not at all. jeff223 posted May 25th a 5 shot 3/4" group at 100 yds. with a 30/30 handi. That IS impressive at the range. I love to hunt with my 2" shooting Marlin, and killed a 20" 8pt. last season, at roughly 90 yds. But it definitely is not a match gun. A good handi, will absolutely shoot 1" or less if I do my job and feed it what it likes, and yes sometimes these guns do need a little coaxing to make 'em act right.

I've got a H&R Topper in 30-30, I've got two loads that I've developed that it likes. 125 gr nosler balistic tip, 34.5 grs. IMR 3031 and 150gr Hornady sp, 32.7 grs. of Imr 3031. Both shoot 1" groups @ 100 yrds. I've taken 4 deer with 125's and two with 150's. I love 30-30's Ilive in florida. Longest shot at about 175 yrds.

While it is true ,you can load spire point bullets with great success, I believe the .30-30 is a better choice for cast bullets than the .06 or the .308. You can approach top .30-30 velocities with cast bullets for pennies per bullet. Great accuracy is possible with cast bullets as well.
The .30-30 Handi rifle is alot of fun with alot of flexability.
no x now!
