Grizzly shot in Ontario
« on: May 24, 2005, 04:12:07 AM »
This grizzly was shot in the southern part of NW Ontario, last week. I never knew grizzlys were in this area of the province. Seems the warm weather has played a part in the bears moving south within that region.

 The related story is here...

hmmm.. something not right here. no griz season in ont. regulations. you cannot shoot a griz if your hunting black bear. that's like hunting whitetail and shooting a mulie. somethings not right...

That is exactly what i though too. I dunno, the link sure seems valid, but then again, maybe I am a sucker.

I posted this hoping perhaps a forum member from that region could weigh in on this and offer some insight.

The website that this came from appears to be one serving the community of Kenora, soooo.....???

hmmm. someone couldn't identify his species perhaps?? but how did a griz get to Ontario?? maybe it was just a really dirty polar bear that wandered too far south.

I'd say very unlikely.
When was this supposedly shot? There is no spring bear season at present in Ontario either.

That picture was floating around a couple of years ago, and then it was captioned as an Alaska Brown taken in Alaska.  I think someone's been taken here.

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think there are any grizzlies in Manitoba or Saskatchewan, so how would it get here?  Also, 538 lbs is a big Black, an average Griz and a smallish Brown.  The shape's all wrong for a Polar Bear (as well as the colour).

I believe that grizzlies have been extinct in Ontario for a few hundred years.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!

there has only been one griz sighting in manitoba, and that was right at the tree line south of churchill, mb. that bear was sighted and confirmed a griz by the manitoba dnr, and it's theorized that it was probably from northern alberta or b.c. and just kept wandering east. there have been no confirmed sighting since. As a follow-up, I called the kenora dnr office (since it's only a couple hrs away from winnipeg) and spoke to a c.o. I gave hin the link, he looked at it, laughed and said" if that was shot in ontario, that hunter would have been charged on the spot for poaching.
John C. is right... there is no spring season for bear.

Grizzlys in Ontario?  Boy, you could have fooled hell out of me on that one.  I really doubt that.  There's a catch somewhere.  Best wishes.
