Where to start??

Hey Guys I have been          for about seven years now. Mainly at varmints in our pecacn Orchard. These include Crows, squirrels, Jays, Coons and other pests that eat Pecans. For years I have shot these pests with a 22LR, a 17HMR and a 12guage shotgun. These have worked ok for most situations but the crows are a serious problem, Usually only allowing only 200 to 300 yd shots. For this reason I have invested my hard earned money on a Handi-Rifle in 22-250. I plan to reload for this rifle and my question is what podwer, Bullets do you suggest starting with? This is not my first reloading experience because I reload for my 270 win. Any suggestions are welcome. P.S. I currently have IMR4350 and IMR4831 for my 270.

Thanks thats some good info. I loaded a few with 39.5grns of 4831 with a 55grn bullet. Then I had problems with the gun closing! Any one had this problem with a handi rifle with reloaded ammo?

I don't have a gun like yours but your problem may be that you did not fully resize your brass.  Did you lower your resizing die far enough so it sat firm against the shell holder plus 1/4 turn?  What press do you have?  There is the proper way to resize.  let me know if this is waht you did.  put the ram fully up with the proper shell holder in  place.  screw the sizing die in until it meets the shellholder and then give it 1/4 more and lock up you ring.  see if a case so sized will easily close in your rifle.  JB

Aaro, ya might wanta post your Handi questions up in the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum....there are a few 22-250 Handi shooters there. :wink:

I am using a hand loader where you use a hammer to knock the casings into the resizer. I have not gotten a chance to get to basspro to get a set of dies for my presss yet but that date is comming up soon hopefully this weekend!! Anyway ill keep working at it till i get it right. I have the same problem using a lee loader on 30-30shells in a topper and a marlin lever. I have found that you can resize in the lee loader to fit both if after the first time resizing turn the shell 90 degrees and resize again some times more than once. Just be sure and inspect the shell closely afterwards.

I got some older federal factory loads and the problem with the once fired brass is nowhere as bad the once fired brass can be fit into the gun and the gun closed. So my thoughts are that maby the newer winchester brass is cheaper so as being thinner? What yall think? The federal brass is from the 70's or so for a former 22-250 that my grandpa used to own.

Aaro, brass that was fired in another gun will only work with the Lee Loader if the chamber of the first gun was smaller than your Handi chamber. Brass that has only been fired in your Handi can be reloaded several times before it has to be full length sized.

Hate to tell you, but it's only going to take a few shots to teach the crows how far away you can hit them.
