Bad Chamber?
« on: July 03, 2005, 05:36:52 AM »
A little over a month ago, I posted in another thread that my 917VS was
definately a keeper........then immediately began having ejector problems.
Thought it might be a dirty chamber, so cleaned it up. But the other day
another shell was not ejected AND the tip of the ejector spring broke off!!
I pryed the shell casing out and it was cracked from the neck, through the
shoulder, and a quarter way down the case!!

I shoot many starlings from the barn, so went on a spent casing hunt only
to discover that about half of the casing necks were cracked. I did not
notice this when the rifle was new.

I called Marlin about the broken ejector and they are sending another one.
At first I was thinking the case was just too brittle, but after finding so many
cases with cracked necks......I'm wondering what could have happened to
this chamber in a stainless steel barrel? I'm really sick about this, because
it is such an accurate firearm.

Suggestions?

This is my very first Marlin firearm. How are they about correcting
problems? At this point, I have no idea if the problem is their fault or
mine, but can't think of a thing that I could have done to cause this....yet,
the problem didn't seem to exist when it was new.

Have ya tried more than one lot number or brand of ammo?? There are several threads on split cases at RFC, so it's not totally uncommon. If the problem doesn't go away with new ammo, I'd contact Marlin for help.

Sweet 17 Marlin

They have been having alot of problems with the Marlin Not so sweet 17s I don't know how many guns that were sold at our local Wal-Mart that had to go back to the factory because of extraction problems. I think alot of it is pressure with the cartridge its self. When I first started chronographing the HMR I was getting just over 2,550fps. or very close to factory spec now some of the ammo is going over 2,700fps for the 17gr. bullet I think CCI needs to tone it down a little before the get into trouble!!!

Thanks Tim, that helped. Hadn't been to RFC for quite awhile and had
missed the links about cracked necks, shoulders and cases. Sent an email
to CCI and asked them what was up, since neck & shoulder cracking has
happened in practically every make of firearm, and is not limited to
Marlins. There were many posts complaining of ejector problems in
several makes.  Thanks again.

Another Wal-Mart Marlin 17HMR going back to Marlin to get fixed another case of fired rounds that won't extract!   I think this makes around 20 rifles that I know of that are having problems all Marlins

If you're referring to my Marlin Hummer, it did not come from Wally-World,
and it's going nowhere. And if you go to the links so graciously provided by
quickdtoo, you will see that folks have been having problems in practically
every make of rifle chambered for the .17HMR, i.e., cracked necks,
cracked shoulders, AND ejection problems............it is NOT a problem
specific to just the 917.
