High power scores!!!

I shot a low highpower score on Sunday this week. I am relatively new to highpower. But I am very frustrated because the match before was much better...... I know I need to work on my follow thru a little more. What I was wondering was when you sight in do all of you hold the front of your rifles down on the rest??? Or do you let it rise like it would when shooting off hand??  
I want what we all want and that is higher scores. What I would like to have more than anything is consistency.
Just wanting to pick everyone's mind!!!

Don't sight in on a rest. The gun will shoot differently in hand than on the rest depending on how you handle it in both situations. Sight in before the match off hand with a spotter and learn how to call your shots. ...IE where you where when the shot broke then you can tell how much correction you need if any from the info the spotter gives you about where the bullet actually went. It takes time. High Power is probably the most difficult form of silhouette due to the recoil and the changing conditions over the long ranges.  Don't get down on yourself we all go up and down in scores certainly in the beginning and even later. If you want to improve quickly pick up a rimfire or a good PCP and start shooting those matches also. You will get much more trigger time and that equals more practice and that usually means higher scores. The only down side to learning in High power is the recoil covers up many of the mistakes before you see whats happening. HP is a lot of fun but personally I don't shoot all that much of it because it creates a lot of bad habits for me. Both the rimfire and the air rifles will teach you a lot about trigger control and follow through. Then just when you think you got it...you'll learn something else subtle or get a little better at some other part.  Good luck

I hold mine down, not classy to see your fine firearm bouncing off the concrete bench (does happen when the hands arn't working). I think? I see about .5-1 min or so differance on chickens from bench to position and that being shots going lower. (holding it down?) checking from position is the best but unless you've a considerable good hold and call radius and mighty big dose of confidence you could smoke a barrel and have the match starting and still not be set up yet. Sight in with enough shots to see a group with elevation and windage in mind at then current conditions. Unless you're blessed with one of those ranges that has fairly stable conditions you're likely out west to see everything change several times during the course of a match. Afternoons in Phoenix it was several times each bank of turkeys.

Shoot off hand as much as possible when sighting in...If you dont have a spotter to help you out, dont worry get a paper target setup with a point of aim on it...usually a dot made with a marker then look to break your shot on that dot take your time try to call the shot then have a look to see where you hit.  adjust windage elevation after a few shots if you see a group develop.

Dont be in a rush to start knockin down sils until you see your shots on paper ...get the fundamentals developed and then the sils will look like they just fall down when you give them the quick nudge and a wink.

as said previously get the rimfire out to get good trigger time and see how you get on...

What Maver said "leave your troubles at the door and free the mind... " Has a lot to do with this sport. Leave your emotions behind the firing line and you will knock down a lot more targets. You can be mad or happy after the relay is over. Emotions will get your mind off the target and thinking about things other than how to fire the perfect shot and where to place it each time.
